[G] Personally Yours on the Go - Personalized Recommendations in Google Maps 4.7 Posted: 15 Nov 2010 11:07 PM PST Official Google Mobile Blog: Personally Yours on the Go - Personalized Recommendations in Google Maps 4.7Google Maps on Android just got even hotter with Hotpot, our new local recommendation engine that helps you discover places you'll love based on opinions from you and your friends. Here's how to get the benefits of Hotpot on your phone:Rate places on the go — Now you can write and publish ratings and reviews from your mobile phone. We make it quick and easy with a new rating widget designed for rating places on the go. Install it from your homescreen by going to Menu > Add > Widgets > Rate Places. You can also post ratings and reviews directly from any Place page. So, when you polish off the crispiest carnitas taco you've ever eaten, you can pull out your Android phone to celebrate the event and give that taqueria the public love it deserves. Get personalized recommendations — Why rate the places you've been? First, your ratings will personalize your search results by customizing them according to your tastes. Even better, when you add friends to the mix using Hotpot on your computer, your ratings will point them in the direction of the best enchiladas in town the next time they crave Mexican food, wherever they happen to be. Of course, this works the other way too — so to reap the rewards, you'll want to add friends to get recommendations for the places they love. Notice how John Hawkins, a colleague of mine in London who knows a lot about English pubs, recommends The Grenadier below. Get Google Maps 4.7 for Android 1.6 and above everywhere Maps is already available. Just search for Google Maps in Android Market (or tap here from your phone). By the way, if you're an iPhone user, good news: we'll soon have a Places app that allows you to rate and get place recommendations as well. Alternatively, you can rate and get place recommendations from your phone browser (iPhone and Android) in the US. Just visit the Places tab at google.com as we roll out over the next day. We hope you enjoy getting and giving personalized recommendations to make place finding better and more fun. [G] Happy Birthday, Robert Louis Stevenson! Posted: 15 Nov 2010 07:16 PM PST Inside Google Books: Happy Birthday, Robert Louis Stevenson!Posted by Archi Sarkar, Google Books Support Team "The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean; not to affect your reader, but to affect him precisely as you wish." Robert Louis Stevenson (source: LIFE Magazine) He did it once with Treasure Island (1883), and did it again with Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) and then again with Kidnapped (1886) — delighting readers with journeys into mystical lands and chance encounters with mysterious people. These were masterpieces of the creative genius of none other than the famous nineteenth century poet and novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson. Born in 1850, Stevenson spent a rather protected childhood in Edinburgh, Scotland. But, his wanderlust and story-writing instincts distinguished him from his peers and family. At the tender age of sixteen, he published his first work, The Pentland Rising: A Page of History (1866), commemorating two hundred years of the Covenanters' rebellion. However, in an attempt to follow in his father's footsteps and support the family business, Stevenson pursued a degree in engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He enjoyed travelling to his family's engineering works over summer not because of technical interests, but because it gave him new insights for his writings. In April 1871, Stevenson finally declared his decision to pursue a career in literature, much to the disappointment of his family. In 1880, he married Fanny Vandegrift Osbourne and spent an idyllic honeymoon at Napa Valley, north of San Francisco, California. He recounted his experiences in The Silverado Squatters (1883). The Samoan home of author Robert Louis Stevenson (source: LIFE Magazine) In the following years, Stevenson penned his immortal tales of adventure, publishing Treasure Island, Kidnapped and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde alongside Prince Otto (1885), The Master of Ballantrae (1889) and Catriona: A sequel to Kidnapped (1893). From shipwrecks and exotic islands to stealthy pirates and split personalities — all made up the colorful canvas of his novels. Illustration from Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (source: LIFE Magazine) He also published collections of short stories including New Arabian Nights (1882) and The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887). Stevenson even composed anthologies of poetry such as A Child's Garden of Verses (1885) and Underwoods (1887). Robert Louis Stevenson enriched English literature with his singular contributions to the classics. His works inspire wonder, while eloquently entertaining our dreams of adventure. Here's a toast to you, Mr. Stevenson, for following your dream! Happy Birthday! URL: http://booksearch.blogspot.com/2010/11/happy-birthday-robert-louis-stevenson.html |
[G] Spot a problem? Check the Known Issues page Posted: 15 Nov 2010 07:14 PM PST Inside AdSense: Spot a problem? Check the Known Issues pageWe work hard to make sure that AdSense is always up and running smoothly. Even so, there can be slight issues, and when those happen, we try to resolve them as quickly as possible. To keep you informed about any issues our engineers are tackling, and provide you with workarounds so you can continue to effectively manage your account, we want to remind you about the Known Issues page.We update this page regularly to keep you posted about our progress as we work toward a resolution. We also record recently resolved issues so you can check if something you've experienced in the past has been fixed. In fact, we now have two Known Issues pages, one for the old interface and one for the new interface. This way, you'll know if an issue pertains to the interface you're using. If you don't see your issue listed, join the discussion in the AdSense Forum to see if other publishers are experiencing the same thing. We monitor your feedback in the forum to help identify issues, so if multiple publishers are discussing a similar concern, we'll be sure to escalate it to our engineers immediately and post any details and workarounds to the Known Issues page as soon as possible. You can also report an issue about the new interface to our product teams directly from the interface by clicking the 'Report Issue' link available on the top of every page. Thanks for staying on top of your account! We'll do our best to keep everything working as smoothly as possible. [G] Introducing the new AdSense interface, now available globally Posted: 15 Nov 2010 07:14 PM PST Inside AdSense: Introducing the new AdSense interface, now available globallyLast November we announced that we were starting to test a new interface with a limited group of publishers. Since then, we've been focused on adding new features and incorporating feedback from our testers. Today, we're excited to announce that we're rolling out the new AdSense interface to all publishers globally. You should now see a "Try the new AdSense interface" link appear in the upper corner of your account. Clicking the link will bring you to the new interface.Built based on feedback we've heard from you, our publishers, the new interface is full of features designed to help you make more money with AdSense. We want to thank you for all the input you've given us, and show you some of the ways it's reflected in the new interface. You've told us that data that helps you better understand your performance is critical to growing your revenue, so we've made sure that the new interface gives you more insights. You can now run even more detailed performance reports by ad type, ad size, ad unit, targeting type, and bid type for total earnings and other metrics, over custom date ranges. You'll also find graphs of your data on the new Performance reports tab. You can quickly view impressions, clicks, and earnings all in one graph, compare text ad performance to image ad performance, compare date ranges, and easily analyze data to recognize trends. You've continued to let us know that protecting your brand by having control over the ads that run on your site is extremely important, so we've improved our ad controls and made them easier to use. All ad controls are now in one place, on the Allow and block ads tab. Here, you'll be able to filter ads from specific advertisers, categories, and ad networks. In addition, you'll notice that we've updated the ad review center to make it easier to review and manage ads that have been placement-targeted to your sites. You can now search for ads in the ad review center by ad type, keyword, URL, or ad network, and choose to allow or block them. You've shared with us the need to manage your account more efficiently, so we've redesigned the interface to help you complete tasks quickly and easily. The new interface allows you to quickly see your earnings and payment information, find relevant features, and make changes to your account. It also brings relevant help and other resources, like videos and blog posts, right into the interface, so you can get the information you need without leaving your account. We encourage you to give the new interface a try. To learn more, check out google.com/ads/newadsense. You'll find additional videos, including a tour of the new interface, information about new features, and a getting started guide. You can also join the conversation in our Forum to share best practices and discover what other publishers think about the new interface. Thanks again for all your feedback. We hope you like the new interface! UPDATED Nov. 11, 2010: All AdSense publishers now have access to the new interface, as our Engineering team was able to speed up the roll out across all accounts. [G] Google Earth Enterprise customer honored for government IT achievement Posted: 15 Nov 2010 05:43 PM PST Official Google Enterprise Blog: Google Earth Enterprise customer honored for government IT achievementEditor's note: From time to time, the Google Earth and Maps Enterprise Team likes to show off our users who have created useful and timely applications with our products. Marty Kitrell, from the Information Technology Laboratory of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, explains how many agencies organized to build the Google Earth Enterprise powered project called NIPRNet Globe Service (NGS), which is one of the 10 award winners for 2010 Outstanding Information Technology Achievement in Government by the Government Computer News.Google Earth has revolutionized how people see the world. Through simple clicks of a button, a user can zoom to any part of the world and quickly access information about any place on earth. It's technology that millions use to plan vacations and business trips, map routes from one place to another and learn about where they are going and what they will encounter along the way. It provides an effortless window to all parts of the globe. How can those same capabilities be given to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers? It hasn't been possible — until now. The Information Technology Laboratory at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, MS, and Program Director Transportation Information Systems (PD TIS) and Program Manager Joint-Automatic Identification Technology (PM-JAIT), have collaborated to combine Google Earth Technology and the Non-Classified Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) Global Services (NGS) project. It solves the two main problems that have precluded the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from using Google's state-of-the-art technology — security and customization. NIPRNet Globe Services is the result of three years of research and development in building and deploying a fully operational decision-support system based on Google Earth Enterprise technology. Through NGS, the Corps of Engineers can now quickly access customized globes containing detailed information of specific geographical areas following a natural or man-made disaster required for decision support, including satellite imagery, maps, terrain and made-to-order data fields. With customizable layers, the Corps can quickly access as much or as little information as needed for emergency planning and management. And, importantly, the data is secure. No commercial servers have to be accessed because NGS has custom-written geocodes and auto-update servers that run on NIPR behind the .mil firewall. Because of its ground-breaking technology, NGS been named as one of 10 award winners for 2010 Outstanding Information Technology Achievement in Government by the Government Computer News. Team members of NGS were formally honored at the GCN Awards Gala on Oct. 27 at the Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner in McLean, VA. If you want to know more about NGS, please contact NGS applications manager Robert Walker at robert.s.walker@usace.army.mil. [G] Improvements to Product Search for this holiday season Posted: 15 Nov 2010 01:19 PM PST Official Google Blog: Improvements to Product Search for this holiday seasonEvery year retailers start the holiday shopping season earlier and earlier—and still I procrastinate until late December before getting started. This year I've already made my list and I'm ready to go.I usually get my holiday shopping done in two ways: online (e-commerce) and offline ("brick and mortar" stores). I've found that shopping online is best when you know what you're looking for—you can search for specific items, research multiple brands or compare reviews. On the other hand, shopping offline makes it easier to explore products in person and sometimes discover things that you didn't know existed. Plus, it's usually the only way to take your purchase home the same day. The line between online and offline shopping is starting to blur: According to a study by Forrester while 93 percent of retail purchases today happen in a store, more than 46 percent of those in-store purchases are influenced by online research. Not to mention that shoppers can access the web from anywhere at anytime—including from their mobile phones when browsing the aisles of a local store. All of this got our team thinking about how we could help further bridge the gap between online and offline shopping. This week, we're introducing several new features to Product Search that start doing just that. Local availability on Google Product Search: We've partnered with more than 70 retail brands—including national retailers like Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma, as well as software manufacturers like JDA, Epicor and Oracle—to connect shoppers searching online with local stores that have the items they're are looking for in-stock. For example, if you're looking online to get your son that new Wii video game he's been wanting, you can click on the "nearby stores" link to see where it's in stock nearby. (If you're a retailer who's interested in taking part, you can learn more on the Google Retail Blog.) Local Availability in Google Product Search Google Shopper 1.3: Our mobile shopping app helps shoppers on the go research items and find the best place to buy them either online or in a nearby store—and it already has more than 2.5 million downloads. This version includes new search filters like "price" and "brand" to help refine your search. And, you'll still get features like Local Availability, voice search and rapid continuous barcode scanning (so you can point your phone at a product and get information from the web)."Popular products" and "aisles": We've borrowed an idea from successful brick and mortar stores and in the coming weeks, we'll roll-out two features called "popular products" and "aisles" to help people learn about and discover new products. When you search for a category of products such as "camera lenses," our new popular products feature helps you get started by showing you the lenses other people are viewing online. "Aisles" helps you browse and discover products by organizing results into sub-categories that others have found helpful. For example, if you're looking for a new TV, you can choose between display types like LCD and plasma. If you're interested in camera lenses for that brand new SLR, you can shop by the aperture of the lens. Aisles and Popular Products We hope these features make it easier for you to get your shopping done this holiday season—whether it's online, offline or in the new space in between.Happy shopping! Posted: 15 Nov 2010 01:14 PM PST Google Open Source Blog: A name check, no moreWhen we first launched Google Project Hosting back in 2006, we wanted to do what we could to encourage best practices around open source development. This was expressed in a variety of ways, one of which was tied into SourceForge's namespace. Here's how it used to work: people would create a project on Google Project Hosting, and if that project's name was already in use at SourceForge, we would email that project's administrator and ask them if it was cool to use the name again. Most of the time, the person creating the project on Google Project Hosting was the same person on SourceForge, looking to reserve the name on both. Sometimes though, the project on SourceForge was inactive or had never been active, so we would manually approve the name on Google Project Hosting. In the last few years, it's almost always been the latter case where people want to use a name that has never been active, so we've stepped in to allocate that name to the new project leader. Since this is, by a long shot, how most of these name arbitration requests have turned out, in the spirit of efficiency we've decided to shut down the SourceForge name check on November 22nd. Happy hacking this Thanksgiving* and we hope you enjoy Google Project Hosting! [G] Larimer County Moves to Google Apps in Just 3 Days Posted: 15 Nov 2010 12:17 PM PST Official Google Enterprise Blog: Larimer County Moves to Google Apps in Just 3 DaysEditor's note: Today, our guest blogger is Andy Paratore, CIO of Larimer County in Colorado. Home to nearly 300,000 residents in north-central Colorado, the county's offices are in the city of Fort Collins. Larimer County shares a border with the State of Wyoming, and both will soon have a common email system, as well. Please join Andy for a live webcast about making a rapid transition to the cloud this Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. EDT / 11:00 a.m. PDT / 6:00 p.m. GMT. Register today. While most people watched fireworks over the July 4th weekend, the Larimer County government used the holiday to switch all our employees to Google Apps. With this "big bang" approach, it took just three days for us to migrate our 1,800 employees and over four million email messages to Google's web-based email and collaboration applications. As a result of this rapid switch, the county saved implementation costs, improved mobile access to information, and provided employees with new and innovative applications to help us do our jobs. Of course, careful planning and preparation were key to making this fast move to the cloud. We did a detailed comparison of Google Apps and several on-premise solutions and found Google delivered the best value and features. We had 100 county employees pilot the applications for six weeks, which allowed us to identify and resolve issues in advance of the big migration. And we took advantage of the contract put in place by the Colorado Statewide Internet Portal Authority (SIPA) and Denver-based Google Apps partner Tempus Nova. By switching to Google from our prior on-premise Novell Groupwise system, Larimer County benefits in many ways. We initially expect to save $50,000-$75,000 annually in server and support costs, and hope to save even more in the future as we take advantage of more capabilities of Google Apps; these are important savings for a county facing challenging budget circumstances. Perhaps more importantly, we're enabling county employees to be more productive: offering additional collaboration capabilities like chat, real-time document sharing, and easy-to-build websites; allowing access to information from work, home or on the road with the same user interface; and making them less dependent on IT with an extensive set of online training and help tools that allow them to resolve questions themselves. I look forward to sharing our experience with other organizations that are looking to make a rapid move to the cloud, please join me on Wednesday's webinar to learn more.
