[G] Passing the torch to the cloud: NYU is going Google Posted: 02 Nov 2010 03:51 AM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Passing the torch to the cloud: NYU is going Google(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog)The weather report may predict sun today in New York City, but it's beginning to look more like a city that's in the "cloud." Today, NYU announced that it's moving to Google Apps for Education, providing cloud-based email and collaboration tools to the entire university community. This announcement comes just weeks after New York State created an initiative to bring Google Apps for Education to their K-12 schools. With students and faculty across New York now using Google Apps, it looks like the Empire State has fully embraced the cloud. This move to Google Apps will provide more than 60,000 students, staff and faculty at NYU with Google tools like Gmail, Calendar, Docs and Sites and will bring all 18 schools of NYU—including medical, dental and law schools—together on one uniform system. This project is estimated to save the University around $400,000 annually by eliminating the need to purchase, upgrade, and maintain in-house mail servers and software licenses. Marilyn McMillan, NYU's Chief Information Officer says the move is "...a win-win: in one stroke, we are able to provide better email services to members of the NYU community, offer a new set of tools for academic collaboration, and achieve savings for the University." The community of NYU joins more than 10 million users from thousands of schools across the globe who have gone Google, and we're proud to welcome them to the family. [G] Announcing the Panoramio Photo Contest Posted: 01 Nov 2010 10:52 PM PDT Official Google Blog: Announcing the Panoramio Photo Contest(Cross-posted from the Lat Long Blog)The Panoramio community enables you to share your photos and explore them on Google Earth, Google Maps and other places. If you've never geo-tagged a photo, watch this video to learn how easy it is to add photos to the Panoramio layer in Google Earth. Now you can add some excitement to your photo project and enter your photos to the monthly Panoramio Geotagged Photo Contest! Starting this month, we'll be giving away the new Casio Hybrid-GPS camera EX-H20G to the winner of each category (Scenery, Heritage, Travel and Unusual Location). The Panoramio community reviews all of the submissions and votes for what they consider to be the best each month. Casio's new Hybrid-GPS camera combines a GPS engine with autonomic positioning made possible by a motion sensor. This makes geotagging easy—both outdoors and indoors. If you haven't joined the Panoramio community yet, try it out and don't forget to participate in our monthly contest. To enter your photo, click on "Submit to the contest" and choose a category. Good luck and we can't wait to see your photos! Posted by Gerard Sanz, Panoramio Community Manager URL: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/announcing-panoramio-photo-contest.html |

[G] AdSense in Your City is coming to Seattle Posted: 01 Nov 2010 10:34 PM PDT Inside AdSense: AdSense in Your City is coming to SeattleOver the summer, we traveled to five cities across the US for our AdSense in Your City program. The first round of roadshows got great reviews from attendees, so we wanted to extend the program to meet more of you and provide publishers in a different part of the country with personalized optimization tips. On Wednesday, November 10, we'll be in Seattle for our fall AdSense in Your City adventure. A few of our optimizers will be in town to hold 20-minute optimization sessions at a local coffee shop between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. We're going to keep it casual this time around, so we can provide one-on-one consultations to as many of you as possible. We'd love to meet you, so please fill out this form if you'll be in the Seattle area on November 10 and would like to schedule an appointment with our team. Once we get your RSVP, we'll follow up via email with additional details if there's still room. Scheduling will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, but we'll do our best to include as many of you as space will allow. See you in Seattle! [G] Handy tools to help Americans vote Posted: 01 Nov 2010 06:30 PM PDT Google Public Policy Blog: Handy tools to help Americans votePosted by Dan Berlin, Public Sector Engineering Manager(Cross-posted from the Official Google Blog) As Americans gear up for the midterm elections on November 2, we wanted to share a few tools that make it easier to gather voting information. When you search on Google for [polling place] or [where to vote], you'll see a search box to help you find your polling place, candidates, and local election office. Just type in the home address where you're registered to vote. The search looks like this: This feature is powered by the Google Election Center, an experimental service that lets election officials provide data directly to Google in order to create a set of search tools. Anyone with a website can also provide this same functionality by embedding the open source Election Center gadget on your site, or use the gadget code or API to build your own. And you don't need to be at your computer to easily find this information. If you'd rather get it on your mobile device, we've also created a mobile landing page: m.google.com/elections. As for election news, you'll find a special Google News section with stories for each state so you can easily catch up on the latest headlines. We hope all of these tools help you get and stay informed throughout the election season. URL: http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2010/11/handy-tools-to-help-americans-vote.html |

[G] The 2010 election on YouTube: By the numbers Posted: 01 Nov 2010 03:29 PM PDT YouTube Blog: The 2010 election on YouTube: By the numbersIn these 2010 midterm elections, campaigns, voters and interest groups have continued to innovate new ways to share their political opinions on YouTube. Because YouTube allows anyone to post and share videos globally, you've made this platform the vanguard of the political media discussion. Some of these efforts to influence the political dialog on YouTube were more successful than others. Today, we're sharing who emerged on top of the YouTube elections heap – and we're going strictly by the numbers. The top 10 most-viewed videos, sourced from all videos categorized as News & Politics on YouTube, are a mixed bag of official campaign videos, user-generated content and videos from interest groups: 1. Congressman Assaults Student on Sidewalk 2. We Are Better than That 3. America Rising - An Open Letter to Democrat Politicians 4. President Obama, No One is Laughing in Arizona 5. Language 6. Brewer to Obama: Warning Signs are not Enough 7. Those Voices Don't Speak for the Rest of Us 8. FCINO: Fiscal Conservative in Name Only 9. Governor Christie Responds to Teacher During Town Hall 10. Arizona Sing-A-Long: Read Immigration Law! Interestingly, every video in the top 10 comes from the Republicans, which is quite a departure from 2008 when left-leaning Yes We Can topped the charts. In addition, immigration was an extremely hot topic on YouTube this year, with three of the 10 most-viewed videos about the Arizona immigration law (and two videos came from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer). Now, let's take a look specifically at the 450 candidates for public office who've registered for official Politician channels on YouTube this fall. Here's a rundown of the top 10 most-viewed Politician channels on YouTube in the last month:
YouTube Insight allows us to see where the view counts are coming for any individual video. For example, parodies of O'Donnell's "I'm You" video (like the Gregory Brothers' "Songify This") received millions more views than O'Donnell's original campaign video nationally, but Insight shows us that O'Donnell still received more views in the state of Delaware than any parody video. Similarly, the memorable "Why" video from the No. 2 politician on the list, Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway, shows that he too did an effective job of targeting voters in his state - even though the video went viral nationally. Stay tuned tomorrow for more YouTube and Google video and trends data, during our special Election Night coverage with CBS News. Ramya Raghavan, YouTube News and Politics, recently watched "Mourning in America". URL: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/youtube/PKJx/~3/hQ1QKRm3kqY/2010-election-on-youtube-by-numbers_01.html |
