[G] Looking ahead in the YouTube player

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 05:37 PM PST

YouTube Blog: Looking ahead in the YouTube player

Pssst! We've got a surprise — we want to give you a sneak peek to videos on YouTube.

Years ago we created a way to link to a certain moment on a video, which let you find, share and comment on just your favorite parts. Now we're expanding that control even more. Over the coming weeks, you'll be able to see an image preview or a series of thumbnails with three new features on our video player. So whether you're sneaking a peek ahead, scanning backwards, or using a thumbnail to find where you stopped watching a video, you'll soon have three options to instantly look through YouTube videos. Here's how each works:

Taking a sneak peek

So excited (or maybe so scared) that you want to find what happens later in the video? Hover your mouse over the seek bar and a thumbnail of that moment will appear, and you can click to start watching from that moment.

Scanning through thumbnails

Let's say you started a video but had to come back and finish it later. You thought you were the middle of the video when main character looks dramatically into the camera, or maybe it was the shocking look from the supporting character a few seconds ago. Now you can drag the handle along the seek bar to show a filmstrip of thumbnails of previous and upcoming scenes.

Zooming in on long videos

If you're watching a video that's longer than 90 minutes, like one of the growing list of movies on YouTube, you'll see an added feature that lets you zoom in on the seek bar, one and a half minutes at a time. This second bar that appears gives you more granularity for finding that exact moment you want on a long video. Check out Life in a Day to see how it works.

With an hour of video uploaded to YouTube every second, we've got a lot of sneak peeks to get ready on YouTube, and not every video will have this feature available at launch. Let us know what you think as you start seeing these features around the site.

[G] Google Cloud Storage brings more storage solutions to the enterprise

Official Google Enterprise Blog: Google Cloud Storage brings more storage solutions to the enterprise

Posted by Navneet Joneja, Product Manager for Google Cloud Storage

Google Cloud Storage enables developers to store and access massive amounts of data on Google's infrastructure with high reliability, availability and performance. Since Google Cloud Storage graduated from preview last year, many developers have tapped directly into Google's storage capabilities.

We are also seeing lots of technology providers integrating Google Cloud Storage directly into their offerings. For example, several providers of enterprise storage solutions have integrated with Google Cloud Storage to make their products and services even better.

Here's how a few of these companies are helping their customers build a bridge to the cloud with Google Cloud Storage:
  • Panzura allows globally distributed enterprises to store, collaborate and backup files in the cloud using Panzura File System and Google Cloud Storage.
  • StorSimple offers a single integrated appliance for primary storage, data protection and disaster recovery. Now, you can connect your StorSimple appliances to the cloud with Google Cloud Storage.
  • TwinStrata's storage gateway can now be used in conjunction with Google Cloud Storage for data storage, backup and disaster recovery in the cloud.
  • Zmanda provides backup and disaster recovery solutions for businesses. You can now use Zmanda's software to backup your on-premise data to Google Cloud Storage.
  • Gladinet makes it easy to upload a file from your desktop to Google Cloud Storage, share it with your team and manage access controls using a web-based interface.
I'm thrilled to see other companies building innovative products using Google Cloud Storage. Today, we're also announcing lower storage prices to make it even more affordable to store your data in Google's cloud. The new pricing will be effective retroactively from March 1st, 2012.

If you're interested in learning how you can tap into Google's cloud storage capabilities to serve your company's storage needs, we'd love to have a conversation or you can get started online.

[G] Improved discussions, search scanned text in PDFs, and more

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 11:04 AM PST

Docs Blog: Improved discussions, search scanned text in PDFs, and more

Fresh on the heels of adding discussions to Google presentations and the ability to edit within the Google Docs Android app, we've been hard at work on a few other new features to enhance your Google Docs experience.

All your comments--in one tidy place
We just added the discussions feature to Google drawings, and today we're making it even easier to see a log of all of the comments that have been made whether you're using drawings, documents, or presentations. Just click on the "Comments" button in the upper right corner of the editor to see a complete history of your discussions. You can reply in line, resolve or re-open comments, link directly to a comment, or change notification settings--without ever leaving the "Comments" menu.

Better text search for PDFs and images
Last month, we launched a feature to let you search for text inside the PDFs in your documents list. Now, using the same optical character recognition technology, you can search for and copy highlighted text when you open a scanned PDF, like a fax or hotel receipt.

It's not just stuff in your documents list: we've also made text in PDFs and images uploaded to Google Sites searchable.

And that's not all...
In addition to the features that were released today, over the last few weeks we've also made a bunch of other changes that you may have noticed. Now you can:
  • Add custom Javascript and CSS to your Google Sites
  • See full names in document and presentation comments (instead of showing email addresses)
  • Use keyboard shortcuts for navigating between table cells in documents
  • Cancel running scripts from the Google Apps Script editor
  • Add donut charts and error bars in spreadsheets

[G] Supercharge ad performance with DFP Optimization

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 11:04 AM PST

DoubleClick Publisher Blog: Supercharge ad performance with DFP Optimization

When advertisers are evaluating whether to advertise on a publisher's site, they want to ensure their ad will perform well. Advertisers decide whether to keep buying on your site or a competitors' based on if their campaigns are reaching the most valuable audience and meeting their campaign goals.

As a publisher, ensuring your advertisers campaigns are receiving the impressions, clicks, and conversions they expect can be a daunting task. Ad operation teams spend hours at the controls of their ad server adjusting delivery settings, flight dates, and targeting, in effort to help their advertiser's campaigns perform well. But solving this equation manually for hundreds or thousands of campaigns at once is virtually impossible to do.

The answer may lie in technology....and we think we can help.

Today, we're excited to introduce DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) Optimization, an advanced optimization system that supercharges ad performance to help publishers increases the value of their premium inventory, and boost yield for non-premium inventory.

DFP Optimization leverages Google's infrastructure and processing capabilities to automatically deliver the best ad, to the best user, at the best time. The system uses advanced modeling and pattern recognition, and harnesses the power of AdWords machine learning and AdSense contextual matching, to deliver ads to users who are more likely to respond to them. DFP Optimization helps advertisers improve campaign performance, while helping publishers maximize clicks, conversions, and revenue.

Heise Online, one of Germany's leading IT publishers, saw clicks on their optimized campaigns increase by 52% using DFP Optimization. This increase helped their sales teams improve the site stats they share with prospective clients, and were able to charge new premiums for its highly valuable inventory. Thomas Goldmann, Sales Director at Heise Online said "DFP Optimization has had a positive influence on our sales relationships with advertisers. Optimization allows better use of our premium inventory and increases the quality we can make available to our customers."

DFP Optimization is fully integrated with the DFP ad serving platform, and can be easily implemented across all of a publisher's inventory. After activating DFP Optimization, the system will continually learn, process, and adapt; this happens all without any manual intervention from your ad operations team. The system provides validation for publishers and their clients through a built-in control group that demonstrates the percentage lift for each optimized campaign. With this powerful reporting tool, you and your clients will know the solution is working.

To learn how you can begin increase the value of your inventory with DFP Optimization, please contact us.

YouTube Blog: Super Tuesday Coverage, Live and from the Trail

The election season heats up today as voters in ten states -- with a total of 419 delegates at stake -- head to the polls to cast a ballot in the GOP primary.

We've been following the race closely on YouTube, featuring this cycle's trending videos, political advertisements and campaign highlights on youtube.com/politics. Tonight, you can watch live coverage from the Wall Street Journal, whose top editors and reporters will be providing commentary and analysis as the results come in.

Tune in to youtube.com/wsj starting at 7pm ET to follow the evening's returns.

And if you're in one of the ten states holding a primary or caucus today, we'd love to see your videos! For those on the campaign trail documenting the political process at work, you can upload your videos to YouTube using a new mobile app created by the team at Storyful. Available for both Android and iOS, Storyful Direct is an easy way to share your videos with Storyful, who will be choosing a selection to be featured on YouTube and google.com/elections.

Even if you don't live in a state that's holding a primary tomorrow, Storyful Direct can be used to document your experience during the run-up to the Presidential election in November.
