[G] Get indoor maps of Las Vegas Casinos, the Convention Center and more Posted: 10 Jan 2012 09:31 PM PST Google LatLong: Get indoor maps of Las Vegas Casinos, the Convention Center and moreAt the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV, attendees will now be able to use Google Maps on their Android devices to help them find their way in the sea of exhibitors and attractions throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center, select resorts and casinos along the Las Vegas strip, as well as the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. Las Vegas Convention Center with CES Exhibitors Since November of last year, you've been able to use Google Maps in select places to get detailed floor plans and indoor location information within a few meters, as well as an accurate floor level location. Today, we've expanded the list of places with indoor maps by partnering with MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment and others, to provide indoor maps for Caesars Palace, Bellagio, The Venetian, The Palazzo, MGM Grand and many more. We hope that these indoor maps will come in handy when finding your way through the slots and to the shops. And for those of you who catch gadget-fever with CES in town, we've also partnered with a number of Best Buy stores in the Las Vegas area. For more detailed list of indoor maps partners, go to our help center or to see a demo, start here. Starting today, we're also releasing some of the first floor plans in Google Maps that were uploaded through the Google Maps Floor Plans tool. From malls to convention centers, museums and educational institutions from California to New York you will now be able to see these floor plans in Google Maps for Android. So the next time you are looking for the perfect table to win the jackpot or can't find the nearest restroom, simply open Google Maps on your Android device and let indoor maps show you the way. If you're attending CES, please come by the the Google Maps booth to learn more and preview our upcoming Google Maps game! [G] Think fast in the first Think Quarterly of 2012 Posted: 10 Jan 2012 09:31 PM PST Official Google Blog: Think fast in the first Think Quarterly of 2012In the amount of time it takes you to read this blog post, roughly 382 Android phones will be activated, 250,000+ words will be written on Blogger and 48 hours of video will be uploaded to YouTube. The world is moving faster than ever before, bringing us instant access and split-second connections to people and information.Speed is important in technology, but equally essential in business. Consumer expectations are rising as we learn to take speed for granted; today's email is tomorrow's snail mail. In our hyper-real-time world, nanoseconds matter—which means we need to question old assumptions. How will we respond to consumer expectations as the demand for instant access to everything intensifies? How will we keep pace in a world that moves at web speed? The new Speed issue of Think Quarterly explores these questions and more. Our SVP of Engineering Urs Hölzle shares our efforts to speed up the Internet, while Astro Teller, Director of New Products, dreams about the amazing inventions these improvements will unleash. Paul Gunning, CEO of Tribal DDB, talks about the rise of real-time marketing. And journalist Jeff Jarvis wonders if we're really that fast after all. We hope you enjoy the issue. Let us know what you think on +Think With Google. And if you're at CES this week, drop by our Room to Think in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center and tell us your thoughts live. We'll also host a Google+ Hangout there with Astro Teller, author of Speed of Dreams, on Thursday at 2pm PST. [G] Music Tuesday: The Little Willies, David Bowie and more! Posted: 10 Jan 2012 04:12 PM PST YouTube Blog: Music Tuesday: The Little Willies, David Bowie and more!Last year was a stellar year for music here on YouTube, with live streams of Coachella and Lollapalooza festivals, and a barnstorming year-end with Brit-rockers Kasabian live from London on New Years Eve. We also handed our homepage over to a host of musicians, resulting in enlightening curations from the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, My Morning Jacket and tUnE-yArDs's Merill Garbus. And if that's not enough, we even let down the drawbridge to the YouTube castle, and welcomed in a fine selection of performers to take part in our YouTube Presents series. Check out Florence Welch, Common, and Panic! At the Disco at our YouTube HQ!With even more to come in 2012, you can stay up-to-date with the latest on our music homepage. Now, onwards! The Little Willies' country hall of fame Norah Jones's output has always crossed genres, from jazz to soul to pop. Since 2006 she has also explored a passionate interest in country music, with her side project The Little Willies. Six years after their first release, Norah and Co are back with For The Good Times, putting a twist on 12 country standards, including a standout rendition of Dolly Parton's Jolene. To celebrate the release, the band spent some time at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to select some of their favorite country YouTube videos. David Bowie at 65 Few careers can compare to Bowie's, both in terms of individual success and influence on pop culture as a whole. And while it's hard to believe Ziggy Stardust hit 65 this week, even the briefest rummage through the YouTube vaults reveals dozens of gems from down the years, such as the music video for Ashes to Ashes, or this 1973 BBC performance of Jean Genie. To celebrate Mr Bowie's big day, we've put together a playlist of some of his many collaborations with other artists, including Annie Lennox, Arcade Fire and even Bing Crosby. Le Plus Beaux Finally, Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains are not only producing some of the finest French language indiepop we've heard since Les Sans Culottes, they've also released one of our favorite music videos of the (short) year so far. [G] Opportunity for music publishers and songwriters - January 16 deadline Posted: 10 Jan 2012 04:12 PM PST YouTube Blog: Opportunity for music publishers and songwriters - January 16 deadlineYouTube has become a thriving music ecosystem of emerging and established artists, where original music and creative covers can reach an audience of millions. We want to continue to recognize songwriters for their artistic contribution to this community. To this end, last year YouTube announced a new opportunity for thousands of music publishers - and the millions of songwriters they represent - to make money from the use of their music in YouTube videos uploaded by fans. This was a result of an agreement with two leading U.S. representatives of music publishers: the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) and its subsidiary the Harry Fox Agency (HFA). Through this agreement, music publishers (both HFA and non-HFA members) and songwriters have the opportunity to license the musical compositions they represent for use by the YouTube community. Our Content ID system, with input from our partners, allows us to identify these works among the hundreds of millions of videos on YouTube, whether the compositions appear in an original sound recording, or in a cover version uploaded by a fan. When a publisher allows YouTube to run ads alongside videos that incorporate its compositions, the publisher, and its songwriters, will be able to share in the revenue that the YouTube community's creativity yields. Music publishers should review and sign-up for this opportunity by January 16, 2011. Information can be found at www.youtubelicenseoffer.com, and music publishers can opt-in through this website using the claim and control numbers provided in the materials sent last summer. Additional information is available by calling: 1 (888) 430-7225. By opting-in this week, music publishers will be creating a new and future revenue partnership, empowering both their fans' creativity and their own musical endeavors. Join us. [G] Personalized optimization tips explained Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:54 AM PST Inside AdSense: Personalized optimization tips explainedWe've heard from many of you that the AdSense optimization tips we regularly discuss are helpful but you're still not sure just how these tips apply to your sites. You understand that wide formats perform better, but which of your small formats should you swap out? And which format sizes should you replace them with? Over the last year, we've increased our efforts to bring publishers personalized optimization messages that address these kinds of questions with the goal to provide targeted, personalized and impactful tips to as many publishers as possible. The criteria we review to determine eligibility for a tip varies depending on the opportunity but the same principle remains true for all of them: we will only contact you if we expect you'll see a significant benefit from making the recommended changes. Several of the success stories shared on the AdSense blog are of publishers who implemented the specific suggestions we made for their websites. For instance, Surgery Squad, FunCheapSF, and CareerPlanner all saw AdSense revenue increases between 50-200% after making the changes recommended by a personalized optimization tip. While we can't guarantee the same results for all publishers, each tip is generated using rigorous analysis of our entire content network to identify opportunities for significant improvement in AdSense performance. We're constantly analyzing the performance of different AdSense configurations across all site types, regions, and verticals to determine which tweaks and adjustments will work best for your site. When we detect a specific improvement you could make to your AdSense implementation, you'll receive a notification from us either in an email (to the address listed as your contact email and only if you're opted in to Performance Suggestions) or directly to your AdSense account. These messages have been around for awhile but starting this month you'll notice a new line indicating that the message contains a personalized optimization tip that's unique to your website and ad layout. We're also continuously working on new signals and ways to get that information to you in your account. Be sure to check your email and AdSense account for optimization tips. We want your site to succeed with AdSense and we hope these personalized tips will help you achieve higher levels of performance from our products. As with any of our optimization tips, we always encourage you to test to find the right implementation for your site and users! Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:54 AM PST Official Google Blog: Search, plus Your WorldGoogle Search has always been about finding the best results for you. Sometimes that means results from the public web, but sometimes it means your personal content or things shared with you by people you care about. These wonderful people and this rich personal content is currently missing from your search experience. Search is still limited to a universe of webpages created publicly, mostly by people you've never met. Today, we're changing that by bringing your world, rich with people and information, into search.Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of webpages, images, videos, news and much more. But clearly, that isn't enough. You should also be able to find your own stuff on the web, the people you know and things they've shared with you, as well as the people you don't know but might want to... all from one search box. We're transforming Google into a search engine that understands not only content, but also people and relationships. We began this transformation with Social Search, and today we're taking another big step in this direction by introducing three new features:
Personal Results Say you're looking for a vacation destination. You can of course search the web, but what if you want to learn from the experiences your friends have had on their vacations? Just as in real life, your friends' experiences are often so much more meaningful to you than impersonal content on the web. With your world in search, you can find:
As a child, my favorite fruit was Chikoo, which is exceptionally sweet and tasty. A few years back when getting a family dog, we decided to name our sweet little puppy after my favorite fruit. Over the years we have privately shared many pictures of Chikoo (our dog) with our family. To me, the query [chikoo] means two very sweet and different things, and today's improvements give me the magical experience of finding both the Chikoos I love, right in the results page. This is search that truly knows me, and gives me a result page that only I can see. And while I get a nice mix of personal results with results from the web, I can also click the link at the top of the results page (red arrow) for the option to search only within my world. Profiles in Search Every day, there are hundreds of millions of searches for people. Sometimes, it's hard to find the person you're looking for. Once you do find him or her, there's no quick way for you to actually interact. Starting today, you'll have meaningful ways to connect with people instantly, right from the search results. Now, typing just the first few letters of your friend's name brings up a personalized profile prediction in autocomplete. Selecting a predicted profile takes you to a results page for your friend, which includes information from their Google+ profile and relevant web results that may be related to them. And you can have this personal experience instantaneously, thanks to Google Instant. So when I search for [ben smith], I now find my dear friend Ben every time, instead of the hundreds of other Ben Smiths out there (no offense to all of them!). In addition, you'll find profile autocomplete predictions for various prominent people from Google+, such as high-quality authors from our authorship pilot program. Once you select that profile, if you're a signed-in Google+ user, you'll also see a button to add them to your circles right on your search results page. People and Pages As I mentioned earlier, behind most queries are communities. Starting today, if you search for a topic like [music] or [baseball], you might see prominent people who frequently discuss this topic on Google+ appearing on the right-hand side of the results page. You can connect with them on Google+, strike up meaningful conversations and discover entire communities in a way that simply wasn't possible before. Unprecedented security, transparency and control When it comes to security and privacy, we set a high bar for Search plus Your World. Since some of the information you'll now find in search results, including Google+ posts and private photos, is already secured by SSL encryption on Google+, we have decided that the results page should also have the same level of security and privacy protection. That's part of why we were the first major search engine to turn on search via SSL by default for signed-in users last year. This means when you're signed in to Google, your search results—including your private content—are protected by the same high standards of encryption as your messages in Gmail. We also want to be transparent about how our features work and give you control over how to use them. With today's changes, we provide interface elements and control settings like those you'll find in Google+. For example, personal results are clearly marked as Public, Limited or Only you. Additionally, people in your results are clearly marked with the Google+ circle they are in, or as suggested connections. We're also introducing a prominent new toggle on the upper right of the results page where you can see what your search results look like without personal content. With a single click, you can see an unpersonalized view of search results. That means no results from your friends, no private information and no personalization of results based on your Web History. This toggle button works for an individual search session, but you can also make this the default in your Search Settings. We provide separate control in Search Settings over other contextual signals we use, including location and language. That's unprecedented transparency and control over personal search results. A beautiful journey begins Search plus Your World will become available over the next few days to people who are signed in and searching on https://www.google.com in English. While there may be 7 billion people and 197 million square miles on Earth, a septillion stars and a trillion webpages, we spend our short, precious lives living in a particular town, with particular friends and family, orbiting a single star and relying on a tiny slice of the world's information. Our dream is to have technology enable everyone to experience the richness of all their information and people around them. We named our company after the mathematical number googol as an aspiration toward indexing the countless answers on webpages, but that's only part of the picture. The other part is people, and that's what Search plus Your World is all about.
