[G] Introducing the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

The Google Apps Blog: Introducing the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Posted by Matthew Izatt, Product Manager

Update: 11/2/11: Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We've removed the app while we correct the problem, and we're working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who's already installed the app can continue to use it.

Waiting. Walking. Watching TV. Working out. Winding down. Waking up. We check email pretty much everywhere these days. And when we do, we want easy access to our important messages so we can respond quickly and get back to life -- or slinging birds at thieving green pigs.

With that in mind, we've created a new Gmail app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. We've combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go. It's designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device. And it's one more reason to switch to Gmail.

Speed
We want to give you the information you need quickly, with minimal effort and distraction. So we've included some time-saving features:
  • Get alerted to new messages with push notifications and sounds
  • Find an email in seconds with search across your entire inbox
  • Autocomplete email addresses from your Gmail contacts or select from your device's address book
  • Upload photos with a click using the new attachment button in compose view
  • On iPad, navigate your inbox and read your mail simultaneously with split view
Upload photos
Reply, move, label and more

Efficiency
Our inboxes overflow with dozens and even hundreds of messages a day—and this can be even more challenging on a smaller screen. The new Gmail app helps organize your mail so you don't have to go wading through your inbox to find that key message from your boss or loved one:
  • Focus on your important messages first with Priority Inbox
  • Quickly scan countless emails on the same subject with threaded conversations
  • Organize your mail by archiving, labelling, starring, deleting and reporting spam
Threaded conversations on the iPad

Touch
We've also optimized the interface so you can perform common actions in Gmail with the lightest touch:
  • Pull down your inbox to rapidly refresh if you're eager for new mail
  • Swipe right to view your labels without ever leaving your inbox
  • Swiftly scroll through dozens of emails just by sliding your finger
Pull down to refresh
Swipe right to view labels
We hope the Gmail app makes checking email on the go a little easier. It is available in the App Store today and works on all devices running iOS 4+. For more information, check out our help center.

Google Public Policy Blog: Partnering with the American Red Cross to Support Wounded, Ill and Injured Warriors

Posted by Carrie Laureno, Audience Evangelist and Founder of the Google Veterans Network

Last week, Google launched the "Chrome for Wounded, Ill and Injured Warriors" program in partnership with the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces. Google has donated 600 Chromebooks to the Red Cross for exclusive use by wounded, ill and injured warriors during their recovery at five polytrauma centers.

To kick off the program, 20 members of the Google Veterans Network, our employee resource group dedicated to veterans' issues, paid a visit to some friends over at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. We delivered 275 of the Chromebooks and led one-on-one training over the course of two days with warriors, their family members, hospital staff, and Red Cross volunteers.

We realize that technology plays a huge role in staying in touch with friends and family, and we hope that these Chromebooks will help our wounded, ill and injured warriors do just that. For many of these soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, and coasties, emailing, chatting, calling, and video are a primary connection point to family and friends spread across the world.

An additional 325 Chromebooks have been distributed to Red Cross stations at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Womack Army Medical Center, Navy Medical Center San Diego and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

We are proud to partner with the American Red Cross on this initiative. Take a minute to check out the blog post from the Red Cross about the visit.

[G] GoMo: Helping businesses create a mobile friendly website

DoubleClick Publisher Blog: GoMo: Helping businesses create a mobile friendly website

(Originally posted on the Google Mobile Ads Blog)

On a crisp fall day, a young person uses his smartphone to find a store that sells scarves. He searches, finds your site, and clicks-thru, prepared to browse your inventory of scarves, or find your store nearby and buy one. But, after he clicks to your site he runs into trouble - it doesn't load fully, and he spends more time zooming-in and squinting than he does looking at scarves! Frustrated, he gives up and looks for another scarf store. You lose a potential customer.

This happens hundreds, even thousands of times every day because most businesses' websites don't work well on smartphones. The most important thing you can do to grow your business using the mobile web is to create a mobile-friendly website.  So today we're launching an initiative called
GoMo that helps businesses "Go Mobile".

What's a mobile-friendly site?  It's a website designed specifically for mobile users and mobile devices.  It's fast to load and easy to use—no pinching and zooming required.  Some great examples are right here.

Every day more and more of your customers are looking for you…on mobile devices.  If you don't have a site that works for mobile, you're missing out.  61% of users are unlikely to return to a site that's not mobile-friendly.1  On the other hand, customers embrace sites that are built for mobile--consumer engagement increases by 85% with a website designed for mobile devices.2

So, are you ready to Go Mo?  Visit howtogomo.com where you'll find the resources you need to learn about what makes a good mobile site and to start building one.

See how your site performs on mobile phones with the GoMoMeter.

Here's what you'll find at howtogomo.com:

  • See what your customers see.  Enter a website address into the GoMoMeter and see what your site looks like on a mobile phone.  The GoMoMeter will analyze your site and give you customized recommendations on how to make your site more mobile friendly.  You can even download a free customized report!

  • Learn about why mobile matters:  Cool infographics and the latest data will help you learn more about mobile trends and why mobile-friendly sites really matter.

  • Get inspired by great examples: Look at the mobile sites of businesses who are doing it right and learn how to make your site better with our ten mobile site best practices.

  • Find a mobile site builder who can help: Check out our list of mobile site developers who can help you build your mobile website.

Check out this video to learn more about howtogomo.com and how it can help your business.

You can register for our webinar "Making Mobile-Friendly Websites: Best Practices in Action," which will take place on November 10 at 11 am PST/ 2 pm EST.  And check this blog all week; we'll be featuring lots of great mobile site tips and new case studies.

Mobile is critical to your business, and now GoMo makes it easy for you to make your mobile-friendly site.  So, no more excuses!  Check out howtogomo.com and Go Mobile!

[G] Go Blue, go Google

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 09:59 PM PDT

Official Google Blog: Go Blue, go Google

I'm one of hundreds of University of Michigan alumni currently working at Google. So is this guy. I'm proud to have a degree from U-M—and that we made it to two Rose Bowls and one Final Four during my time there. But I'm even more proud that today we're welcoming my alma mater to the Google Apps for Education family. By providing our cloud services to the entire university community, we'll continue to build on the strong relationship that Google and the University of Michigan have had for many years. Many other alums—especially in our Ann Arbor office—are just as excited as I am:

Over a year ago, the University of Michigan (U-M) announced a new IT strategy known as NextGen Michigan, a plan to upgrade technology across the campus. Laura Patterson, U-M's Chief Information Office, told us the switch to Google is just one of many projects that will make up U-M's multi-year strategy for changing the approach to IT service and investing more heavily in technologies that will advance the university's academic, teaching, research and clinical programs. She said: "Adopting Google Apps for Education will help support U-M's leadership in teaching, learning and discovery, as well as improve collaboration across campus."

As their first order of business, U-M kicked off a project to select a unified messaging and collaboration platform to help consolidate the more than 40 email and calendar tools which currently service about 90,000 students, faculty and staff. After a review process that included townhall meetings and a campus survey, the university's IT steering committee overwhelmingly recommended Google Apps for Education as U-M's preferred provider.

In addition to the suite of products in Google Apps for Education, U-M also plans to use APIs to build rich integration with existing campus services and encourage increased collaboration.

Hail to the Victors—The University of Michigan is going Google!

[G] Discovering Talented Musicians with Acoustic Analysis

Google Research Blog: Discovering Talented Musicians with Acoustic Analysis

Posted by Charles DuHadway, YouTube Slam Team, Google Research

In an earlier post we talked about the technology behind Instant Mix for Music Beta by Google. Instant Mix uses machine hearing to characterize music attributes such as its timbre, mood and tempo. Today we would like to talk about acoustic and visual analysis -- this time on YouTube. A fundamental part of YouTube's mission is to allow anyone anywhere to showcase their talents -- occasionally leading to life-changing success -- but many talented performers are never discovered. Part of the problem is the sheer volume of videos: forty eight hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute (that's eight years of content every day). We wondered if we could use acoustic analysis and machine learning to pore over these videos and automatically identify talented musicians.

First we analyzed audio and visual features of videos being uploaded. We wanted to find "singing at home" videos -- often correlated with features such as ambient indoor lighting, head-and-shoulders view of a person singing in front of a fixed camera, few instruments and often a single dominant voice. Here's a sample set of videos we found.

Then we estimated the quality of singing in each video. Our approach is based on acoustic analysis similar to that used by Instant Mix, coupled with a small set of singing quality annotations from human raters. Given these data we used machine learning to build a ranker that predicts if an average listener would like a performance.

While machines are useful for weeding through thousands of not-so-great videos to find potential stars, we know they alone can't pick the next great star. So we turn to YouTube users to help us identify the real hidden gems by playing a voting game called YouTube Slam. We're putting an equal amount of effort into the game itself -- how do people vote? What makes it fun? How do we know when we have a true hit? We're looking forward to your feedback to help us refine this process: give it a try*. You can also check out singer and voter leaderboards. Toggle "All time" to "Last week" to find emerging talent in fresh videos or all-time favorites.

Our "Music Slam" has only been running for a few weeks and we have already found some very talented musicians. Many of the videos have less than 100 views when we find them.

And while we're excited about what we've done with music, there's as much undiscovered potential in almost any subject you can think of. Try our other slams: cute, bizarre, comedy, and dance*. Enjoy!
