Inside AdSense: Help Japan with your AdSense earnings

You may have already seen some of Google's various efforts to help Japan in the wake of last week's 8.9 earthquake. We've heard some inspirational stories from publishers who are donating their AdSense revenue to help and we've heard from many of you wondering how you can also donate AdSense earnings to help those affected by the earthquake.

Currently, the fastest way to contribute is to donate directly via our crisis response page. All donations will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society and will be used directly to support to those affected by the earthquake.

We're working to roll out a way to donate earnings directly from your AdSense account. Please check back here for updated information.

If you're looking for additional resources, we've also launched the Google Person Finder in Japanese, Chinese and English as a tool to help locate missing people, as well as sites in Japanese and English to provide updates on the affected area.

[G] Multiple chart ranges and hidden sheets in Spreadsheets

Docs Blog: Multiple chart ranges and hidden sheets in Spreadsheets

Having control over what you can graph and which sheets you can see at any given time is important. Today we added the ability to chart multiple ranges and hide sheets in Google spreadsheets.

Chart Multiple Ranges
In charts, you are now able to graph multiple ranges. Take this chart depicting time vs distanced traveled.

You can now add extra ranges by clicking on "Select ranges..." and "add another range." You can also manually add new ranges separated by commas like "Charts!B5:B12, Charts!D5:D12, Charts!F5:F12."

In this example, here is what the chart with the above data selected looks like.

Hidden Sheets
We're also introducing the ability to hide your sheets. You can click on a sheet tab and select "hide sheet" to remove a sheet from view.

The sheet can still be seen in the list of sheets and any editor can click on this sheet to bring this back to view. Sheets can also be accessed from the Hidden sheets option in the View menu. Learn more about sheet hiding here.

We hope you enjoy these features, let us know what you think in the forums.

[G] Steady, as she goes: better video processing with Green Parrot Pictures

YouTube Blog: Steady, as she goes: better video processing with Green Parrot Pictures

At YouTube, we see 35 hours of video uploaded to the site every minute from people all over the world. Some videos are beautifully shot by professionals or aspiring filmmakers using the very latest in HD cameras and equipment. But some of YouTube's most popular or moving videos are shot using low-quality mobile phones and video cameras. Take, for example, videos of recent protests in Libya. Although emotionally captivating, they can be jerky, blurry or unsteady. What if there was a technology that could improve the quality of such videos -- sharpening the image, reducing visual noise and rendering a higher-quality, steadier video -- all while your video is simply being uploaded to the site? You can imagine how excited we were when we discovered an small, ambitious company based in Ireland that can do exactly this.

Today, we're pleased to announce we've acquired Green Parrot Pictures, a digital video technology company founded by Associate Professor Anil Kokaram at the Engineering School of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. In the last six years, their small team of engineers has built cutting-edge video quality improvement technology that has been used in major studio productions from Lord of the Rings to X-Men to Spider-Man. Their technology helps make videos look better while at the same time using less bandwidth and improving playback speed. If you're interested in seeing some of the incredible work Green Parrot Pictures has previously done, check out some of the videos on their website.

With the equivalent of over 170,000 full-length movies uploaded to YouTube every week, the team's experience in this area -- working on solutions for both video consumers and experts alike -- will be a source of new ideas and further innovation at YouTube and across Google. We look forward to working with them to make the videos you upload every minute of every day to our site look even better.

YouTube Blog: Ooh la la -- ask Gaga a question!

Attention Little Monsters! Channel your inner Oprah, because now is your chance to ask Lady Gaga everything you've always wanted to know. What's life like on tour? What's her favorite YouTube video? Was the meat dress really made of meat?

In Gaga's own words:

You have until midnight PT on March 18 to submit a video or text question, so just head to Gaga's channel to submit your query or vote on the ones you want us to ask. You can also tweet your question with the hashtag #GoogleGoesGaga. We'll share the interview with you shortly after it's uploaded to YouTube.

So, what are you waiting for?!

[G] A Street View showcase

Google LatLong: A Street View showcase

Since Street View first launched in Google Maps, it's grown from five U.S. cities to locations on all seven continents, and we've been able to visit some beautiful and historic places around the world. To share some of our favorite imagery with you, and also give you a behind-the-scenes look at Street View technology, we've updated our Street View site.

Site homepage, featuring Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa

In addition to the places on the site homepage, we've included highlights from around the world in a gallery that lets you see ski slopes, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and breathtaking places on all seven continents.

Street View gallery, featuring Old Town of Segovia and Its Aqueduct

While we've been able to photograph most places in Street View with our cars, plenty of unique and interesting locations around the world aren't accessible by car. To help us visit places with smaller paths or unpaved terrain, we've developed the Trike, Snowmobile and Trolley, which have enabled us to share parks, ski trails, and even museums with you in Street View. You can now check out pictures and 3D models, and learn more about all of these platforms on the site.
Once we collect new imagery, we "stitch" the individual photographs into the 360-degree imagery you see in Google Maps. The revamped site provides an in-depth look at this process and shows the progression of photos into the immersive Street View experience.

You can also learn about how to use Street View, meet our friendly mascot Pegman, read about our cutting-edge face and license plate blurring technology, or see where Street View is available across the world.

We're starting with this update for our United States site, and will continue rolling it out for more countries in the coming months. Start exploring new places at maps.google.com/streetview.
