[G] Google Display Network introduces new performance bundle Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Google Display Network introduces new performance bundleToday, innovations in targeting, optimization, and measurement can help you achieve greater performance with your Display Network campaigns. We're investing heavily in these areas, and we're pleased to announce several tools that give you better measurement, transparency and value for your display advertising campaigns.Better measurement 1. Relative CTR: User behavior on web pages varies depending on the type of page users are on. For example, users may interact with ads on a product review page differently than with ads on a blog. Clickthrough rate (CTR) tells you how often users click on your ads, but CTR can't tell you how your ads perform compared to other ads on the same page. To better gauge the performance of your Display Network campaigns, Relative CTR shows you how your ads perform relative to other ads running in the same places on the GDN, letting you benchmark your performance across the Display Network. For example, if your display ads have a CTR of 0.04%, while other ads in the same places on the GDN have a CTR of 0.02%, your Relative CTR is (0.04)/(0.02) = 2x. The screenshot below shows how Relative CTR looks in AdWords: Why does Relative CTR matter? At first glance, a CTR of 0.04% may seem low. But knowing that this is two times the CTR of competing ads tells you that your ads are actually performing, on a CTR basis, better than ads on the same page. This means that your ad creative matches the websites your ads are appearing on and that your audience is responding to your message. Alternatively, you may see that your Relative CTR is 0.5x, meaning that your ads are only getting half of the average clickthrough rate. This means that your ads may not be resonating with the users you'd like to reach and that you may be able to improve performance by refining your ad creatives. To view relative CTR within your AdWords account, go to the "Ad groups" tab, select "Customize columns" from the "Columns" drop-down menu, and select "Relative CTR." Relative CTR will appear at the campaign or ad group level. 2. Impression Share (IS): With the auction model, multiple advertisers compete for the same ad spots on a web page. To help measure your online presence, we've created impression share, which represents the percentage of times that your ads were shown out of the total available impressions for which your ads were eligible to appear on the GDN. In other words, impression share provides you with your online share of voice. Based on IS data, you can increase your share of voice by adjusting your budget or improving your Ad Rank. The Lost IS (budget) metric tells you how many impressions you're losing due to your budget, while Lost IS (rank) tells you how many impressions you're losing due to Ad Rank. For example, you may see that you're losing 25% of impression share due to budget restrictions and must increase this campaign's daily budget to get more impressions. Or you might see that you're losing 35% of impression share due to Ad Rank and may need to raise bids or improve your creatives. Greater transparency With your ads running across millions of sites on the GDN, it can be difficult to keep track of where your ads are and aren't running. The Content Ads Diagnostic Tool (CADT) tells you why your ads aren't showing on the Display Network. For example, you may see that your placement-targeted ad groups are not running because they lost the auction: You can also see when your ad is running, and on what specific placements: We'll start releasing CADT to a small number of advertisers in mid-June and will launch a full release in early July. Better value for your online display dollars Users often need to scroll to see your ads on a webpage. When a user does not scroll far enough to view your ad, these unseen impressions hurt your advertising effectiveness and result in wasted spend. We recently launched a feature called the Unseen Impression Filter that ensures that CPM advertisers are not charged for impressions that users have a low probability of viewing. For example, say that a user lands on a publisher site where your ad serves below the fold: You'll only be charged when we predict that a user will actually scroll to see your ad: Note that this feature is automatically enabled and does not require any controls or set-up. Wrapping up All four of these tools and features -- Relative CTR, Impression Share, Content Ads Diagnostic Tool, and Unseen Impression Filter -- are available in all AdWords languages. [G] There’s a perfect ad for everyone Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: There's a perfect ad for everyoneOn Thursday, June 9th, Neal Mohan, Google's VP of Display Advertising, delivered a keynote at the Interactive Advertising Bureau's Innovation Days @ Internet Week. The talk is entitled "There's a perfect ad for everyone," and during it Neal made six predictions about how display advertising will change for the better by 2015. You can view the recording at google.com/watchthisspace. The talk was about the new technologies in display advertising that are resulting in better user experiences, better advertiser results and incredible growth for the industry. We're investing significantly to help improve display advertising for advertisers, publishers and users. But we're poised to make even greater advances in the years ahead. We're at the beginning of a user-focused revolution, where people connect and respond to display ads in ways we've never seen before. If you watch the talk, let us know what you think by following us and sending us a note. Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: June 8 is World IPv6 DayEditor's Note: We published a version of this post yesterday with a couple inaccuracies. We took down the post temporarily while we made corrections. On June 8, together with major web companies such as Facebook and Yahoo!, we will enable IPv6 on our main websites for 24 hours. We do not anticipate any significant impact on AdWords, AdSense and DoubleClick users or their campaigns. Google supports IPv6 because it's critical to the future of the open web. With limited address space, the Internet is bursting at the seams, and IPv6 is the best solution. The good news is that most users don't need to do anything special to prepare for World IPv6 Day. Our current measurements suggest that the vast majority (99.95%) will be unaffected. However, in rare cases, people may experience connectivity problems, often due to misconfigured or misbehaving home network devices. Want to check to see if your connection is IPv6 ready? Visit our IPv6 test website. It will verify IPv6 compatibility, and provide tips for troubleshooting if needed. Learn more about IPv6, or read about World IPv6 Day. [G] Embedded format now available for Ad Sitelinks Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Embedded format now available for Ad SitelinksSince we launched Ad Sitelinks back in 2009, we've worked to extend the format to appear on more queries and more devices. We've also enhanced Ad Sitelinks with smart serving to automatically show your highest-performing Sitelinks more frequently. Today we're introducing a new feature of Ad Sitelinks, embedded sitelinks, that makes it even easier to integrate targeted links within your ads. With the embedded format of Ad Sitelinks, there are no additional lines appended to your text ad. Instead, text in your ad that exactly matches one or more of the sitelinks in your campaign will automatically be linked to that sitelink's destination URL. With embedded sitelinks, potential customers can pick the part of your ad that applies directly to their current interests and visit the most specific page for that topic. For example, if you sell home goods, your ad may mention that you sell appliances, furniture, and flatware. If you have separate sitelinks set up for the words "appliances," "furniture," and "flatware," those words would be hyperlinked in your ad text, leading potential customers to a page for the specific part of the ad that drew their interest. We believe that these targeted destination URLs may encourage more users to click on your ad and make it easier for them to find what they're searching for when they arrive on your site. To show with embedded sitelinks, your campaign must be enabled for Ad Sitelinks. Also, your ad must appear above the search results, and part of your ad text must exactly match one or more of your Ad Sitelinks. Additionally, embedded sitelinks will only show for ads that don't meet one or more of the requirements for one- or two-line Ad Sitelinks. Embedded sitelinks are now available to AdWords users globally, excluding China, Japan and Korea. To learn more about Ad Sitelinks and the new embedded sitelinks feature, you can visit the AdWords Help Center. [G] New My Client Center feature provides easier account management across agencies Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: New My Client Center feature provides easier account management across agenciesToday's post comes cross posted from the AdWords agency blog:We've just released a new My Client Center (MCC) feature called multiple links, which makes it easier for agencies, SEMs, AdWords API developers, other 3rd party providers and clients to work together while taking advantage of the benefits of the MCC structure. It enables up to five MCCs to link to and manage a single AdWords account as necessary. Multiple links also removes the distinction that Google currently has between UI/API and API-only links. [G] Add +1 to help your ads stand out Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Add +1 to help your ads stand outPeople make choices about your website many times each day--whenever your pages appear in Google search results. What if the people who love your site could help their friends and other users find your great content right at the moment of decision? That's why we introduced the +1 button on Google search in March. +1 annotations show your customers which pages people they trust have found and enjoyed first, making it easier to find content they're likely to care about. Since we announced +1, we've gotten requests from Google search users and advertisers alike for +1 buttons in more places than just search results. That's why today we're making the +1 button available to sites across the web. Sometimes you want to recommend a web page after you've visited it. After all, how do you know you want to suggest that great hotel deal in Madrid if you haven't checked it out yet? We've partnered with a few sites where you'll see +1 buttons over the coming days: You'll also start to see +1 buttons on other Google properties such as Android Market, Blogger, Product Search and YouTube. Adding +1 buttons to your pages is a great way to help your ads stand out on Google. By giving your visitors more chances to +1 your pages, your search ads and organic results might appear with +1 annotations more often. This could lead to more--and better qualified--traffic to your site. To get started, visit the +1 button tool on Google Webmaster Central, where you'll configure small snippets of JavaScript to add to the pages where you want +1 buttons to appear. You can pick from a few different button sizes and styles, so choose the +1 button that best matches your site's layout. When a user clicks +1, that +1 applies to the URL of the page they're on. There are some easy ways to ensure your +1s apply as often as possible to the pages appearing in Google search results. To stay current on updates to the +1 button large and small, please subscribe to the Google Publisher Button Announce Group. For advanced tips and tricks, check our Google Code site. For information about how the +1 button affects your search ads, check out the AdWords Help Center. If your site primarily caters to users outside of the US and Canada, you can install the +1 button code now; the +1 button is already supported in 44 languages. However, keep in mind that +1 annotations currently only appear for English search results on Google.com. We're working on releasing +1 to other domains in the future. If you have customers who love your content (and we bet you do), encourage them to spread the word! Add the +1 button to help your ads stand out with a personal recommendation right at the moment of decision, on Google search. [G] Important changes to clicks on directions for AdWords location extensions Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:56 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Important changes to clicks on directions for AdWords location extensionsMany of you use location extensions to automatically show your business address and other information in your ads on Google. These ads also show directions to your business location, along with your address and phone number. By clicking on the directions, potential customers can map the quickest route from their location to your business. We've observed that location extensions with directions are beneficial to users and lead to more interactions with your ads. In January, we launched a report in AdWords to help you measure these useful interactions. Over the next few weeks, you'll see performance metrics for directions alongside those for clicks and phone calls. We'll also begin to charge for clicks on directions in the same manner as clicks on your ad's headline or phone number. If your campaign has a high number of these clicks, this indicates that your customers are interacting with your ads to get directions to your business. Below are some answers to a few questions that you may have as a result of this change: Where will I see performance metrics for clicks on directions? You can see the number of clicks on directions in the same place as your other click metrics (select Segment, then Click type from your summary tables). You can review the performance of these clicks to determine if they're helping you meet your marketing goals. How will directions appear in ads on desktop and mobile devices? For AdWords campaigns with location extensions enabled, a "Directions" link will be eligible to appear in your ads and sponsored Google Maps info windows on desktops. On mobile search ads, a "Get directions using Google Maps?" pop-up will appear when the user clicks on the expandable map. Clicking on "OK" in the pop-up allows users to get directions to your business. Where can I see the past performance of clicks on directions? For a report, select the Free clicks view within the Dimensions tab of your AdWords account. If you don't see the Dimensions tab in your account, click on the arrow button next to the existing tabs above your performance table, and select it in the dropdown menu. I don't want to pay for clicks on directions. How can I opt out? You can do this by removing the location extensions associated with your campaign. However, location extensions provide valuable information to local customers about your business, so we encourage you to carefully analyze your campaign performance before doing so. To learn more about location extensions and directions in ads, please see the location extensions overview section of the Help Center. [G] Watch the lunar eclipse from anywhere Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:45 AM PDT Google LatLong: Watch the lunar eclipse from anywhere(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog)We're always fascinated by the unique wonders of space and the world—what can we say, it's the geek in us! Naturally, when we learned that part of the world will be treated to a rare 100-minute long total lunar eclipse starting at 11:20am PDT today, we were both excited and disappointed that this rare occasion wouldn't be visible from our Mountain View campus like last year's eclipse. We suspect we aren't alone, so you'll be glad to know that we've worked with Slooh Space Camera to let you experience the spectacle wherever you are in the world, in real time. Slooh will host a live mission interface using Google App Engine that lets anyone not lucky enough to live in certain areas (South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia) take part in this rare astronomical event. It's equipped with audio narrations from real-life astronomers so you can hear a firsthand, expert account of the event. You can also watch the live stream on the Google YouTube Channel or from the Sky layer in Google Earth (download this kml), while exploring the fascinating world that exists in our galaxy. Finally, those of you on the go can download the Slooh Space Camera Android app to view the images right on your phone. If you're fortunate enough to be able to view this event in the sky, we hope you'll get the chance to step outside and indulge in the spectacle. [G] My Places now helps you manage your important locations Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:45 AM PDT Google LatLong: My Places now helps you manage your important locationsAlmost every day you encounter new places and businesses, whether it's a new store you spotted on your commute to work, or a restaurant you visited with friends over the weekend. To date, you've been able to star places on Google Maps, rate them via Google Places, or add them to a customized map with your own icons and annotations through My Maps. But keeping track of all the locations you care about and memorizing which places you starred or rated isn't easy. So today, we're unveiling the new My Places tab on Google Maps, which helps you quickly view and interact with your saved maps, starred locations, and rated businesses. The My Places tab replaces the My Maps tab in the Google Maps toolbar. Items are organized by date with your most recent activity at the top, and filters make it easy to sort and view only your maps, starred locations or rated places. And of course, you can still create and share personalized My Maps through the "Create new map" link. My Places also simplifies your ability to manage the locations that make up your personalized maps experience. Using the drop-down arrow next to each location in your list, you can easily delete any of your saved maps, stars or Google Places ratings. These personalization changes will automatically be synchronized across all other Google properties including Google Places, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. To use My Places, you'll need to sign in with your Google account. Try it now: visit Google Maps and click the My Places tab to access and organize the places you care about.
