[G] The polls are open—vote for your favorite doodle! Posted: 04 May 2011 11:21 AM PDT Official Google Blog: The polls are open—vote for your favorite doodle!Today, we're thrilled to introduce the 40 Regional Finalists for this year's U.S. Doodle 4 Google contest. This year we had a record number of submissions—more than 107,000 from talented student artists from every state across the country. We were amazed and delighted by not only the quantity of submissions but the caliber of this year's entries. For the second year in a row, we're celebrating these winners in their very own schools. From Stilwell, Okla. to Woodinville, Wash., today Googlers are visiting the schools of our Regional Finalists to celebrate their incredible artwork along with thousands of their teachers, friends and classmates. Our doodle team, volunteer Googlers and incredibly talented Guest Judges helped us determine the 40 Regional Finalists. Whoopi Goldberg, Evan Lysacek, Michael Phelps and Jim Davis (just to name a few) lent a hand to help find the cream of the artistic crop. Now comes one of the most exciting parts of the contest—your votes! From now until May 13 at 11:59 p.m. PDT, you can cast your online votes for your favorite Regional Finalist's doodle (one vote for each of the four grade groups). On May 19, we'll announce the national winner at our awards ceremony in New York City. The national winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship and $25,000 towards a new computer lab for his or her school, and the winning design will appear on google.com on Friday, May 20. All of the top 40 Regional Finalists will also have their work publicly displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and at SFMOMA in San Francisco. Our top 40 Regional Finalists weren't the only winners today—we'd also like to congratulate the 400 State Finalists. Last but not least, we'd like to take the time to thank the teachers, parents and administrators who encouraged their students to dream big and put those ambitions on paper. Without you, this contest wouldn't have been possible. Posted by Marissa Mayer, VP, Product Management URL: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/polls-are-openvote-for-your-favorite.html |
[G] Store up to 25,000 contacts Posted: 04 May 2011 09:37 AM PDT Official Gmail Blog: Store up to 25,000 contactsPosted by Mike Helmick, Software EngineerGmail used to have a limit of 10,000 contacts. For most of us, this was way more than enough, but we heard from some of you who use Gmail to communicate with more than 10,000 people. We want you to be able to store all of your contacts in a single place, so starting today, we've increased the limit for all Gmail users, including all those of you who use Google Apps, to 25,000 contacts. Also, previously an individual contact could be no larger than 32KB — big enough for most people, but not always sufficient for those who like to keep a lot of notes on individual contacts. Now, each contact may be up to 128KB in size, allowing you to store more information in the notes field. URL: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/store-up-to-25000-contacts.html |
[G] CIS Fair Use legal experts answer questions about YouTube Posted: 04 May 2011 08:10 AM PDT YouTube Blog: CIS Fair Use legal experts answer questions about YouTubeTwo weeks ago we offered the YouTube community the opportunity to ask leading fair use experts from Stanford's Center for Internet and Society (CIS) questions about fair use. Using Google Moderator, more than 300 of you submitted 100+ questions and voted almost 3,000 times on the questions you wanted answered. As expected, the questions varied dramatically, reflecting the diversity of content created and shared by YouTube users. Some of you wanted to know about dubbing over a cartoon, while others asked about adding commentary to video game play and someone else was hoping to create software tutorials using computer screencasts. This week Anthony Falzone, Executive Director of the Fair Use project, and Julie Ahrens, Associate Director of the Fair Use project, answered a selection of the top voted questions (in the video's description you can select which specific questions you want to see answered): Thanks to all of you who submitted and voted on questions and please visit the YouTube Copyright Center if you have more questions. (Full disclosure: Google provided start-up funding for the Fair Use Project, but has no involvement in the cases or positions that the project chooses to take.)
