[G] Gmail in mobile Safari: now even more like a native app Posted: 28 Oct 2010 04:21 AM PDT Official Google Mobile Blog: Gmail in mobile Safari: now even more like a native appGo to gmail.com from your iPhone and you'll notice two improvements we've rolled out over the past few weeks. First, scrolling is snappier: the speed of scrolling reflects the speed of your swipe gesture. This is helpful for long conversations where a few quick flicks will get you to the information you need much faster than before. Second, the toolbars stay on screen while you're scrolling rather than moving down into view after each scroll. Being able to access your toolbars from any point on the page should make it easier to triage your email and move around the app. If you use Gmail in your mobile browser a lot, you may have noticed that we recently tried several different variations of these buttons. We've iterated on the design and made improvements based on your feedback. If you have more suggestions, please post them in our forum, or if you use Twitter, mention #gmailmobile and we'll take a look. If you're a developer and are interested in learning about the Javascript and HTML techniques we used to do this, we'll post an article to code.google.com/mobile in the coming weeks. You can see these improvements by visiting gmail.com from the browser of iPhone and iPod touch devices running iOS4 (English-only for now). And if you like Gmail in mobile Safari, make getting to it easier by tapping the "+" at the bottom of the screen and then "Add to Home Screen." (Don't see the new changes yet? [G] On the Rise: Pick which YouTube upstart goes on the homepage Posted: 27 Oct 2010 09:35 PM PDT YouTube Blog: On the Rise: Pick which YouTube upstart goes on the homepageMore and more of our YouTube partners are hitting subscriber numbers in the 100,000s and even in the 1,000,000s. We want to help more of you to get to those kind of subscriber numbers, which is why we're starting a new monthly feature called "On the Rise."Here's how it works: every month, we'll pull together a list of partner channels whose subscriber rate has quickly accelerated in the last 30 days but who still have less than 100,000 subscribers. We'll winnow that list down to a handful of channels, and then we'll ask the community to vote on one channel to be featured on the YouTube homepage and get promoted through our social media channels on Twitter and Facebook. So, here are the four channels vying for the inaugural spotlight, in alphabetical order: emilynoel83 is Emily Eddington, a 26-year-old morning news anchor whose channel is devoted to all things beauty, particularly fun ideas for TV news makeup. golf says it all: this channel consists of golf videos, tips and lessons, aggregated from Tour Links Putting Greens, BunkerShot.com, NationalSchoolForms.com and Show Me the Golf. kalebnation, a 22-year-old vlogger who says he enjoys "wild rumpuses." optibotimus is "just a simple guy" that does toy reviews. "I typically stick to what I grew up loving," he writes on his channel. "Transformers, mostly." You've got one week, until the end of the day on November 2, to vote for your favorite in the top right corner of this blog. We plan to showcase the winner on our homepage on November 6. You can also nominate yourself or your friends for next month's feature in the comments section of this blog post (though please note: comments are moderated due to spam). [G] Swissotel's High Value Visitor Segment Posted: 27 Oct 2010 09:10 PM PDT Google Analytics Blog: Swissotel's High Value Visitor SegmentThanks to the Conversion Room Asia-Pacific Blog and Vinaoj's team in Singapore for this insightful, enterprise-class case study.Need a little inspiration for ways to get a LOT our of Google Analytics? Well, Advanced Segments is a great place to start. As you might know, they allow you to dissect your traffic into audiences that you actually care and want to know more about. And here's a great example of use by a major hotelier. Barbara Pezzi, Director Webmarketing, Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, is back to share with us how Swissotel properties in Singapore used advanced segments to better understand the needs of their UK and Australian visitors. By using advanced segments and her detective skills, Barbara was able to determine that Australian visitors were seeking deals, while her UK visitors were more interested in the quality of the rooms. She was able to optimise her AdWords campaigns and messaging based on these insights, and quickly managed to see a 68% increase in revenue and a 92% increase in conversion rates. Posted: 27 Oct 2010 07:54 PM PDT Blogger Buzz: Safe Browsing on BloggerNational Cyber-Security Awareness Month is here once again. In that spirit we wanted to share a bit about what we are doing on Blogger to help fight malicious content, along with some tips for a safer browsing experience online. While spammers are always coming up with new tricks, the combination of Blogger's abuse-fighting systems and the security features of modern browsers helps ensure that you'll be able to browse through your favorite blog content with confidence. We've partnered with other abuse-fighting teams within Google to develop sophisticated systems for automatically detecting and quarantining nefarious content on Blogspot. Over the years, our teams have analyzed the patterns and behavior of malicious blogs and code, and with each new detection our existing algorithms are trained for better coverage in the future. As a result, we are able to catch and quarantine thousands of malicious blogs each year, and are happy to say that our overall spam levels are at an all-time low across our service. Of course, while our automated systems provide great coverage for a wide variety of abuse types, you can always let us know about suspicious blogs by reporting them directly to us via our online form. We're also looking to you, the users, to be our eyes on the web and let us know anything that may have escaped our existing systems. Beyond partnering with us on the detection process, you can also make a difference in your own online security by taking advantage of your browser's built-in security. Modern browsers have powerful security features that can detect potentially malicious sites and alert you should you stumble upon them. Using technology like Google's Safe Browsing tools, users of many browsers see warning screens when attempting to visit sites that automated systems have determined to contain suspicious content. To make sure you have the latest and most secure browser version, please check out the following browser sites: We also recommend using one of the following tools to keep your browser plug-ins up to date: Google-developed SecBrowsing; Mozilla Plugin Check. For more tips on safe browsing and security on the web, check out the home of Cyber Security Awareness Month at the http://staysafeonline.org/. [G] Facebook Likes Google Summer of Code Posted: 27 Oct 2010 06:04 PM PDT Google Open Source Blog: Facebook Likes Google Summer of CodeThis summer Facebook participated in Google Summer of Code for the first time and we want to share an update on the progress our students made. Unlike most organizations participating in the program, we have a number of open source projects rather than just a single project. This meant that we accepted a few students to work across open source projects which we actively contribute to in addition to projects that we've released. We received many applications from students all over the world who were excited to spend their summer working on adding new features to HBase, HipHop for PHP, Scribe, Three20 and XHP. While some projects are still working on merging their changes, by the end of the summer: • Chongxin Li designed and coded some initial support for snapshotting in Apache HBase that will allow for easier recovery from data loss.As part of Google Summer of Code, both the students and mentoring projects receive a stipend, and we asked that what would be given to Facebook is donated to the Apache Software Foundation instead. We really enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in Google Summer of Code and want to thank these five students for their awesome work! Posted: 27 Oct 2010 03:16 PM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Wyoming is Going GoogleWyoming is a state of many firsts. In 1872, it became home to the world's first national park – Yellowstone. In 1925, its citizens elected Nellie Tayloe Ross the first woman governor of a U.S. state. Now in 2010, we're thrilled that Wyoming is the first state in the country to announce plans to move all state government employees to Google Apps for Government.According to Wyoming CIO Bob von Wolffradt, all state agencies – representing 10,000 employees – will migrate to Google Apps within a year. This will be the first time all Wyoming state employees share a common communications platform, which will improve their ability to collaborate with each other in serving the citizens of Wyoming. The decision to go Google was the result of a transparent and competitive evaluation process that began roughly two years ago. Wyoming solicited proposals from multiple vendors and awarded the contract to Google partner Tempus Nova. The state estimates the move to Google Apps will save Wyoming taxpayers $1 million annually. Many other states around the country are using Google Apps, including departments in Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico. Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, New York, and Oregon are also bringing Apps to their K-12 classrooms. All these governments are saving money while equipping their employees with modern collaboration tools that carry the assurance of federal government security certification. We welcome Wyoming to the cloud, and look forward to working with them and Tempus Nova to make the project a success.
