[G] Greetings from Santa Kurara, Kariforunia

Google Open Source Blog: Greetings from Santa Kurara, Kariforunia

Hello from the Unicode Conference in Santa Clara, California, where the Maps Transliteration team is giving a talk about ICU-based transliteration. Transliterating this originally Spanish city name to Japanese, we get サンタ・クララ, which (when morphed back to the Latin writing system) becomes "Santa Kurara."

Machine Transliteration is an active area of research (slides), which means it can be rather challenging in general. Typically, transliteration emulates the pronunciation, but sometimes it also preserves some aspects of the original written spelling. We created transliteration modules with the open-source ICU library for languages that have highly regular spelling; if you're using Google Maps in Japanese, Russian or Chinese, you can see how we use it to display labels in both the local language and your own:

Today, we're announcing the contribution of our ICU transliteration rules for Czech, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak and Spanish to the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository. (For languages with very irregular spelling, like English, we supplement ICU with some more advanced techniques.) If you would like to try writing rules for your own language, have a look at the instructions in the ICU user guide.

アスタ・ラ・ビスタ — "Asuta ra bisuta," from sunny "Kariforunia!"

Official Google CPG Blog: The Four Truths About Boomers and Media Webinar

Close your eyes. Envision a US boomer. What comes to mind? How old is he/she? Are you having trouble envisioning what a boomer looks like? Now think about the last advertisement you may have seen targeted to a boomer. Having trouble thinking of one?

Boomers are defined as adults aged 46-64. 1 in 3 US adults is a boomer. When asked "how old do you feel?", at least 1 in 5 boomers responded that they feel at least 10 years younger than their age. 30% of them say they feel at least 5-9 years younger. More than 74% of boomers say that advertising these days are intended for someone younger than them.

Can advertisers really be missing the mark on hitting America's largest and most wealthy demographic?

Join Google and Nielsen on Tuesday, October 26th at 3pm EST for an eye opening webinar that will change the way marketers think about boomers forever.

Through clickstream, survey data and online testimonials, we will learn The Four Truths about Boomers and Media:

  • Boomers are sponges for content and media. Even more so than the younger generations.
  • Boomers sit on an aided adoption curve with technology. With the help of family and friends, they have the ability to ramp up on technology quickly and proficiently.
  • Boomers are most comfortable straddling what's familiar and what's new. We'll see where they are traditional in their behaviors versus where they are open to new ways.
  • Boomers are a curious and thoughtful group that value quality and family.

Google Chrome Blog: Bringing another Chrome release to you, right on time

Not long ago, we mentioned that we'd be releasing a new stable version of Google Chrome approximately every six weeks to get bug fixes, improvements, and new features in the hands of our users quickly in the spirit of speedy innovation. With that in mind, we're happy to bring you a new stable version of Google Chrome today.

In this stable release, we've focused primarily on hundreds of bug fixes. We've also included a few other things that may be of interest to developers, such as full AppleScript support on Mac OS X for UI automation and implementation of the HTML5 parsing algorithm, the File API, and directory upload (via <input type="file" webkitdirectory>). Also, if you choose to block sites from setting any data in your browser's content settings for cookies, you can now use a new dialog for managing blocked cookies in bulk.

Enjoy!

[G] Live 24-hour webcast from Conan O’Brien HQ: Dancing tacos! 80's aerobics! Intern Twister!

YouTube Blog: Live 24-hour webcast from Conan O'Brien HQ: Dancing tacos! 80's aerobics! Intern Twister!

As Conan O'Brien's crew plans for their 24-hour marathon live stream on YouTube, in what promises to be a kooky peek into life at Team Coco HQ, we thought it was best for them to tell you about it themselves. Here's Aaron Bleyaert, the blogger for the new CONAN show on TBS.

People constantly ask me questions like, "Hey, Aaron, what's it like to work at such an awesome show?" Or, "Hey, Aaron, what do you guys do all day in your offices?" Or even, "Aaron, you are incredibly handsome -- how can one man have such stunning good looks?" The answer to that last one is simple: I moisturize.

For the answer to the first two, I invite you to tune in to the massive online comedy event we're calling "The Live Coco Cam." As the word "live" implies, it will be live. And as the word "Coco" implies, it will be TOTALLY AWESOME. Starting today at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT, we invite you to take a look inside the wonderfully weird offices of the brand new CONAN show as we prepare for our November 8 debut on TBS. We're shoving a camera in the second floor stairwell of our offices and will be broadcasting all of the behind-the-scenes comedy madness live for 24 hours. Here's a taste of the crazy:

Who's gonna show up? What's gonna happen? As our Live Coco Cam event unfolds, all the weird, funny and tender (yes, tender) moments will be captured and uploaded to Team Coco's official YouTube channel so you don't miss a second of the action. In addition, we'll be tweeting about the events through the day and night from our Team Coco Twitter account and will be recapping all the events after they happen (as well as after the event ends) over on our show blog at TeamCoco.com... That is, if I survive the next 24 hours. ;)

So tune in at youtube.com/teamcoco and enjoy 24 hours of Live Coco Cam antics...whatever they may be!

[G] Tips for partners: Ask and you shall receive

YouTube Blog: Tips for partners: Ask and you shall receive

Over the last few weeks in our 'Tips for partners" series, we've shown you tips on:

Our partners have given their own tips on these topics: Bettyskitchen discussed metadata, ZackScott talked about annotations and playlists, and LinusTechTips gave tips on how to find your niche. Now that you are ready for fame and fortune, for our last topic in this series, we want to focus on the YouTube community and how to build your brand and audience.

Help Them Help You

Think of YouTube as your big, extended family; a large community who wants to engage with you, share their opinion, and help you be successful. So help them help you. Use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Google Buzz to engage with your audience and let them know how to keep track of your different YouTube channels, social media outlets, and ways to contact you.

Use your referral headers to see what specific sites are your top referrals. You can see your referral headers through our Insight tool by going to 'My Videos' and clicking on 'Insight' under one video. Next, click on "Discovery" and then "External Links", and set the date range. You can only see a breakdown of external links on an individual video, so make sure to review your top videos to see if your referrals are consistent or different.

An example of referrals for a video:

Customize your interaction with your audience based on your top referrals. If your top referrals are Facebook, Twitter, or Buzz, make sure to let your audience know via those mediums when your next video is live. If your top referrals are YouTube subscribers, post a bulletin to your subscribers letting them know you'd love for them to share your video with one new person.

To Do:

  • Don't be shy, push your content out there. Engage with your audience through YouTube, Twitter, Buzz, Facebook, MySpace and other social media through links to your channel and videos.

  • Widen your reach. A huge amount of view counts come from embedded playbacks so take advantage of this and embed your videos. Share your video with blogs/sites aimed at your audience. They may embed your video because it reaches their target audience.

  • Ask for subscribers! Subscribers can be the best marketers to push your content to different blogs and social media. Ask for subscribers on your channel, through your videos, or through annotations, and then ask them to share your video.

  • It's free to ask for feedback (just keep a thick skin). Make a video where you ask your viewers what they liked or didn't like or what types of videos they would like to see.

  • Look at your comments, see what your viewers are saying and feel free to respond. Also, through 'Insight' you can see the words most commonly used in comments of your videos.

  • Run Promoted Videos to get more eyeballs on your videos and drive community engagement.

  • Add your YouTube Channel to your email signature so your contacts are aware of your ongoing online presence and can easily access your channel.

  • Two minds really are better than one. Collaborate and network with other YouTubers and amaze us with what you can create together.

Now is a great time to log into your account and check out your top referrals and make sure viewers know how to connect with you through social media. Tune in this Thursday (our last post in this series) to hear from one of our partners who'll discuss first-hand how he engages with his YouTube audience and uses social media to increase his audience and build loyalty.

[G] Tracking your ad clicks with dynamic destination URLs

Inside AdWords: Tracking your ad clicks with dynamic destination URLs

Today, we're announcing an update to ValueTrack, a feature for those of you who use third-party tracking software or have access to your web logs. Using the features previously announced, we made it easy to track your search and content campaigns separately by adding special parameters to your destination URLs. With the additional ValueTrack enhancements available today, you can track even more detail including the keyword matching option for your ad clicks.

Starting now, your destination URL can include the {matchtype} and {network} parameters. Here's a quick example of how you might use these parameters:

Let's say you have a keyword-targeted campaign running on Google search, search partners, and the Google Display Network. If your website is www.yoursite.com, you can use the new and existing ValueTrack parameters in your AdWords campaign to set the destination URL to: http://www.yoursite.com/?keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}&source={network}.

If an ad click comes from a search partner, and the keyword that triggered the ad, used cars, is a broad match keyword, in your web logs you will find that the ValueTrack parameters in the URL have been replaced with the following:
{keyword} = used cars
{matchtype} = b
{network} = s
In your web logs you will see: http://www.yoursite.com/?keyword=used%20cars&matchtype=b&source=s

To learn more about all of the ValueTrack parameters and see additional examples, visit the AdWords Help Center.

[G] Google Voice powers TV fan building

Google Voice Blog: Google Voice powers TV fan building

One of the great parts of working on the Google Voice team is that we get to hear about all the interesting, productive, and fun ways you take advantage of Google Voice. Sometimes we hear from students who love the cost savings of the service, and other times we hear from professionals or families who tell us that Google Voice has helped them manage their busy lives.

We recently heard that the folks at the FX Network put Google Voice to use in quite a unique way by giving fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia & The League a creative way to interact with their favorite shows.

Each show has a dedicated Google Voice number that fans can call and leave a voicemail to sound off about their favorite (and least favorite) characters, episodes and storylines.

A handful of lucky fans' voicemails get selected by the FX team and are featured on the site for all to hear.

Google Open Source Blog: Geek Time with Rusty Russell

Free software advocate and Linux developer Rusty Russell sat down for an interview with Google's Jeremy Allison when they were both in Japan for LinuxCon. They discuss Rusty's role maintaining the Linux kernel (0:15), why Australia has produced so many top notch open source developers (3:13), and suggestions for people starting out in their careers and looking to get into open source (9:13). Enjoy!
