Posted: 13 Jan 2010 08:44 PM PST Google Public Policy Blog: Disaster relief in HaitiPosted by Pablo Chavez, Managing Policy CounselWe have been heartbroken by the footage streaming onto YouTube of the devastation caused by yesterday's 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti and inspired by the generosity people are showing toward relief efforts. Here's a Google site that provides disaster relief information -- including ways to donate to the effort online and through SMS. [G] Haiti imagery layer now available Posted: 13 Jan 2010 08:44 PM PST Google LatLong: Haiti imagery layer now availableWe've worked closely with GeoEye throughout the afternoon to make their most recent satellite imagery of Haiti, taken at approximately 10:27am EST today, available as a KML overlay for Google Earth. You can download the KML here and open it in Google Earth, or look at it via the browser plug-in below. You can also open the file in Google Maps. As you'll see, the imagery shows a powerful glimpse into the destruction in Haiti. [G] Imagery & maps in the wake of the Haiti Earthquake Posted: 13 Jan 2010 06:15 PM PST Google LatLong: Imagery & maps in the wake of the Haiti EarthquakeYesterday a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, causing significant destruction and devastation. Since then, we've received numerous requests from relief organizations and our users to share recent satellite imagery of the country. One of our imagery partners, GeoEye, has just provided us with post-earthquake imagery from Haiti. We're working on making it available as a KML overlay in Google Earth as soon as possible; in the meantime, here is snapshot of the imagery we'll be providing. The image was taken at approximately 10:27am Eastern today and this photo shows Port-au-Prince. We will update this blog post as soon as the layer is available. We hope that Google Map Maker can also play a role in disaster relief efforts. We originally opened Haiti on Google Map Maker in response to hurricanes that hit the region over a year ago. Since then, many committed individuals have contributed rich data for the country, and now maps of Haiti appear on Google Earth and Google Maps. Today, we have made this Map Maker data for Haiti available to the UN in its raw form for the earthquake relief efforts. If you have any local knowledge to share, please help us continue to build a better map of Haiti with Google Map Maker. The latest, up-to-date Map Maker information will be immediately accessible through the Google Maps API as a map tile set and through this Mapplet. [G] AdSense for Domains Expands Use of Keyword Hints Posted: 13 Jan 2010 02:01 PM PST Inside AdSense: AdSense for Domains Expands Use of Keyword HintsYou asked for it, you got it! AdSense for Domains, which launched a year ago to help publishers earn revenue through ads placed on undeveloped domains, now uses optional keyword hints more often. These keywords are suggestions supplied to Google by domain owners about the types of content users are looking for when they arrive on an undeveloped domain. They are used to help our system determine the best ads to place on these domains. For example, with the domain www.rockstarsand.com, a publisher might suggest the keywords "bitumen" and "mining" so that ads may appear from advertisers offering oil extraction products.Keyword hints remain optional. When keyword hints are provided by the publisher, our ad-matching systems will use them more often. As always, we aim to provide the most relevant ads for the user, the best value for advertisers, and the best returns for publishers. This means in some cases, keyword hints will be ignored when we have evidence that other targeting approaches perform better. Instructions for setting keyword hints for your domains can be found here. The AdSense for Domains team is continuing to work on additional product improvements, that we will be announcing in the coming months. [G] Google-Feedfetcher subscriber count drops reported Posted: 13 Jan 2010 02:01 PM PST The FeedBurner Status Blog: Google-Feedfetcher subscriber count drops reportedIssue: Subscriber numbers reported by Feedfetcher-Google are fluctuating day to day for some feeds with more publishers than usual reporting drops for the stats represented by Jan 12, 2010 data. There is a known issue with occasional subscriber reporting lapses occurring from Feedfetcher-Google (representing combined Google Reader and iGoogle subscribers). We are actively working on a fix. This only affects the number of subscribers reported to FeedBurner and in no way represents issues with feed distribution and consumption as it pertains to Google FeedBurner, Reader or iGoogle products. [G] Achieving a zero-touch conversion process with Google Apps Posted: 13 Jan 2010 12:54 PM PST Official Google Enterprise Blog: Achieving a zero-touch conversion process with Google AppsEditor's note: Today's guest blogger is Elliot Tally, Director of IT Collaboration and Automation, a leading Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider focused on delivering end-to-end manufacturing solutions for communications, medical, defense and aerospace, industrial, renewable energy, and other sectors. Elliot has more than ten years of experience in high-tech manufacturing and information systems spanning a breadth of industries. He is responsible for enterprise collaboration and messaging systems, process automation and integration, and for Sanmina-SCI's suite of IT applications.Last year, Sanmina-SCI's IT team asked themselves, "Could Google Apps replace Microsoft Exchange for a global, multilingual workforce?" After careful due diligence, the team recently completed a phased migration for 15,000 email users, charting a new course for IT. Elliot and his team will be available on a live webcast next Thursday to talk about the migration and answer questions from participants. Sanmina-SCI is a leader in outsourced Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS). We have 37,000 diverse employees and our business is very competitive. We needed something that was less expensive to maintain and provided better collaboration tools than what our incumbent vendor, Microsoft, offered. After putting Google through the test in more ways than you can imagine [link to first blog post], we decided that Google Apps was the way to go – especially after we saw collaboration tools like Google Sites. Then our job was to migrate 15,000 users in 18 countries...no small feat. We started with several pilots to pinpoint any issues up front, and we conducted user surveys along the way to be sure we knew what users were facing. Many users got very excited. They knew they could get email from anywhere, and have access to collaborative tools like spreadsheets and instant messaging. We also gained valuable feedback on workflows and other issues we'd need to have a plan for during the migration. From the start, we provided more than just a "here's what we're going to do, take it or leave it" approach. We were serious about ensuring that a certain set of activities happened in terms of communication and training, and showing people the features of Google Apps so they knew they were not missing anything. Then we would migrate a whole plant in less than a week. But the upfront training and familiarization process was paramount to our success. In all, the conversion went faster and easier than we anticipated. One of the key factors was support from senior executives, who helped us drive and obtain support across the organization. We did get pushback from some employees but we spent time with them and showed them that, from a user experience standpoint, it might work differently, but they weren't losing functionality. In the end, we came close to our goal of a zero-touch conversion process as an IT team. It was a pretty highly automated, self-service conversion in moving everyone over. There were some gaps, but overall we are pleased with how quickly and efficiently the conversion went. I'd be happy to share what we learned at Sanmina-SCI as a large enterprise that has made the move to Google Apps. We hope that you'll join us for this live event. [G] Finding your way in 18 new countries Posted: 13 Jan 2010 11:26 AM PST Google LatLong: Finding your way in 18 new countriesIn certain parts of the world, getting around is a challenge. Not only are cities in emerging economies evolving rapidly, oftentimes there are no online services to help people navigate. One of the most requested features on Google Maps in Asia and Eastern Europe is driving directions. Google Map Maker users in these countries have been busy adding detailed data like turn restrictions, road priorities, speeds and one-ways. Using that rich data, we've been able to launch driving directions in 18 Eastern European and Asia-Pacific countries. You can now navigate using Google Maps in Albania, Belarus, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, French Polynesia, Guam, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, New Caledonia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Routing from Lahore to Karachi or Bucharest to Minsk has never been so easy! Next time I visit my favorite city, Hanoi, I'll be able to get around with ease. Map Maker was created with a vision of enabling users to contribute high quality, up-to-date, routeable maps data. With this launch, for many of these countries, this is the first time users have had any directions. This has become a reality only because of our passionate users. If you live or are visiting one of these countries, do give it a try and tell us what you think on Twitter at @googlemapmaker. As always, these are your maps - in case you don't find a road, a turn or one-way is incorrect in your neighborhood, you can map it at mapmaker.google.com. [G] In Aftermath of Haiti Earthquake, Reports and Donation Appeals Flood YouTube Posted: 13 Jan 2010 08:25 AM PST YouTube Blog: In Aftermath of Haiti Earthquake, Reports and Donation Appeals Flood YouTubeAs reports of unimaginable devastation continue to come out of Haiti in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck yesterday, footage of the disaster has been streaming onto YouTube, along with calls for help from nonprofit and aid organizations working on the ground. Haiti's president Rene Preval told the Miami Herald that the death toll is likely in the thousands, and images of collapsed buildings, a dilapidated presidential palace, and enormous piles of rubble in the streets bear witness to a truly catastrophic earthquake -- the worst in 200 years in the region. We're keeping a running playlist of the video footage coming out of Haiti on Citizentube; there's a broad collection of citizen reports and news wire clips. We're also promoting videos from nonprofits who can help. The American Red Cross is asking for donations via a call-to-action overlay in this video, and Oxfam is using annotations in this one to direct you to their donation site: As personal stories of the victims of the earthquake continue to pour in, our thoughts go out to all Haitians in this time of great need. We'll continue to update Citizentube with footage from the ground as events progress. Steve Grove, Head of News & Politics, recently watched "Haiti Earthquake Aftermath."
