Official Google Mobile Blog: An enhanced Google Docs experience on Android tablets

(Cross-posted from the Google Docs blog)

Earlier this year, we introduced the Google Docs app for Android. Since then, many users have downloaded the app and enjoyed the benefits of being able to access, edit and share docs on the go.

Today's update to the app makes Google Docs work better than ever on your tablet. With an entirely new design, we've customized the look to make the most of the larger screen space on tablets. The layout includes a three-panel view, which allows you to navigate through filters and collections, view your document list, and see document details, all at once.

Looking at the details panel on the right side, you can see a thumbnail to preview a document and its details before opening it. From the panel, you can see who can view or edit any doc.

New 3-panel view for improved browsing

Autocomplete makes sharing with others on the go even easier

These features are now available in 46 languages on tablet devices with Android 3.0+ (Honeycomb) and above.

You can download the app from the Android Market and let us know what you think in the comments or by posting on the forum. Learn more by visiting the help center.

[G] 9/11 Memorial & Museum is looking for your tribute videos

YouTube Blog: 9/11 Memorial & Museum is looking for your tribute videos

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum has created the 9/11 Memorial YouTube channel, and they're requesting your videos for an archive that will be part of the 9/11 Memorial Museum scheduled to open September 2012. The Memorial and Museum is the not-for-profit corporation created to oversee the design, fundraising, programming and operations of the Memorialand Museum at the World Trade Center.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani offers background about the project and a request for you to record a "silent video tribute" to create a living memorial for the Museum.

"Through this new YouTube channel, people around the world will have an opportunity to join our mission to document the history of 9/11 by sharing their personal experiences," 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said. "This channel is an example of the many ways the National September 11 Memorial Museum is ensuring the history we all lived through is never forgotten."

This project was inspired by the 9/11 tribute album "Ten Years On." The album is a collection of songs compiled by Welsh recording artist Jem in remembrance of 9/11, from artists like John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Alanis Morissette, Johnny Cash, and more. For more information on how to donate or to reserve a free visitor pass to the Memorial, go to 911memorial.org.

[G] Google Earth downloaded more than one billion times

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 02:05 PM PDT

Google LatLong: Google Earth downloaded more than one billion times

How large is one billion? One billion hours ago modern humans were living in the Stone Age. One billion minutes ago, the Roman Empire was flourishing. If you traveled from Earth to the Moon three times, your journey would measure one billion meters.

Today, we've reached our own one billion mark: Google Earth has been downloaded more than one billion times since it was first introduced in 2005. That's more than one billion downloads of the Google Earth desktop client, mobile apps and the Google Earth plug-in—all enabling you to to explore the world in seconds, from Earth to Mars to the ocean floor.

We're proud of our one billion milestone, but we're even more amazed at the way people have used Google Earth to explore the world. When we founded Keyhole, Inc. back in 2001 (the company was acquired by Google in 2004), we never imagined our geospatial technology would be used by people in so many unexpected ways. At www.OneWorldManyStories.com, we've collected stories from people all over the world who use Google Earth to follow their dreams, discover new and distant places, or make the world a better place.

Visit www.OneWorldManyStories.com to learn about people like Professor David Kennedy of the University of Western Australia, who's used Google Earth to scan thousands of square kilometers in Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Professor Kennedy has discovered ancient tombs and geoglyphs dating back at least 2,000 years, all without leaving his desk in Perth. Architect Barnaby Gunning, after the April 6, 2009 earthquake near L'Aquila Italy, encouraged his fellow citizens to start rebuilding the city virtually in 3D. Their online urban planning will aid city planners and architects. Retired English teacher Jerome Burg created Google Lit Trips, which uses Google Earth to match places in famous books to their geographical locations, encouraging students to create connections between the stories they read in school and the world they live in.

We hope you enjoy the site, and that it illustrates how some of those one billion downloads of Google Earth have been making a difference. You can explore these stories right in your browser with the Google Earth plug-in or download the KML files to view in Google Earth.

If you have a Google Earth story you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you. If you don't have Google Earth, download it now and be part of the next billion stories. While it's inspiring to see how Google Earth has touched the lives of so many, we know the best is yet to come.

[G] Getting from ‘Here to there’ with My Location in Google Maps

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 02:05 PM PDT

Google LatLong: Getting from 'Here to there' with My Location in Google Maps

When getting directions on Google Maps, we suggest an origin or destination after you type the first few characters. But, we want to save you even more time by eliminating the need to type your current address each time. Today you can start using 'My Location' as a starting or ending point for your directions using the familiar 'blue dot' found in Google Maps for mobile.

Directions with 'My Location' enabled

Now when you get directions on Google Maps, you'll see "My Location" in the starting location field. All that is left for you is to fill in the destination and hit "Get Directions".

The first time you use "My Location," your browser will ask you to allow Google Maps to get your approximate physical location. If you accept, the dot next to "My Location" will turn from grey to blue, indicating Google Maps has retrieved your current location.

Depending on your browser, you can choose to have Google Maps ask you every time you use the "My Location" feature, or to remember your setting for Google Maps. You can also always opt-out by revoking the permission in your browser's settings.

This feature is possible thanks to modern browsers supporting the GeoLocation API. If you are using one of the supporting browsers--Firefox V3.5+, Google Chrome, Opera 10.6+, Internet Explorer 9.0+, and Safari 5--Google Maps can use this technology to approximate your current location and use it as an origin or destination point.

To help you manage your privacy, Google Maps does not save your location when you enable this feature. You can also easily turn off the "My Location" feature and control your browser's ability to provide your location to Google Maps through the browser's settings.

With "My Location", a second or two saved every time you get directions on Google Maps can add up!

[G] Questions about the mobile consumer? Our Mobile Planet has answers.

DoubleClick Publisher Blog: Questions about the mobile consumer? Our Mobile Planet has answers.

(Originally posted on the Google Mobile Ads Blog)

Good data on the smartphone user is hard to come by. Good data that enables companies to make data driven decisions on how to engage with consumers on their smartphone is even harder to come by.

Today we are launching a new resource to address that need. Our Mobile Planet www.ourmobileplanet.com is a new web site featuring an interactive tool that anyone can use to create custom charts that will deepen their understanding of the mobile consumer and support data driven decisions on their mobile strategy.

The site gives anyone access the full set of data from the "Global Mobile Research: The Smartphone User & The Mobile Marketer" we conducted earlier this year (March & July 2011) with Ipsos and in collaboration with the Mobile Marketing Association.

Example of a presentation ready chart on ourmobileplanet.com

Need to know the smartphone penetration in Singapore? It's 62%. Trying to figure out if more consumers in France or Germany have made purchases via their smartphone? It's France. Want to know if consumers in the UK visit a store after doing a local search on their smartphone? 41% of them do.

Now anyone - marketer, app developer, tech geek, big or small - can answer these questions and many more by drawing on one of the the most extensive, far reaching standardized surveys on smartphone user behavior ever conducted. Not to mention, this is the first time a study this extensive has been made available for free.

We commissioned this survey and have made the data available for free because we believe the shift to mobile is so fundamental that we need to do everything we can to help businesses adapt immediately.

[G] My Publisher Takeaways

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 02:05 PM PDT

DoubleClick Publisher Blog: My Publisher Takeaways

I recently had the opportunity to participate in two publisher industry events in New York. The first was a roundtable discussion with thirty of the brightest minds in the business, from major media brands to up-and-coming digital content players; the second was a live-streamed Q&A with 200 leading publishers and media companies at the paidContent Advertising Conference. Both events reinforced how publishers continue to be a leading force in creating value in display, and I wanted to share a few common themes from my conversations:

  • Friction leads to waste. As we all have experienced, selling ad space is a complex business. A significant portion of every advertiser dollar is eaten up in transaction costs that add very little value. So it was great to hear more and more examples of where publishers are leading the charge in connecting with new buyers, finding inefficiencies and increased CPMs through real-time display buying and Direct Deals on the Ad Exchange.

  • Beyond the banner. Display is not just graphical - successful publishers are using video and mobile not just as added inventory, but by offering truly integrated campaigns that reach audiences across all screens. As you've heard, we continue to invest in helping publishers succeed in this goal. Publishers continue to be optimistic about direct sales, predicting that ad format and audience targeting innovations will spur most of their future growth. Today display is roughly a $25B industry - we think it could be $200 billion.

  • The user comes first. One way that we're working towards combating ad blindness is by incorporating social signals in display. Many publishers mentioned that they're on board with the notion of 'fewer but better' ads, and are actively developing methods to change audience perception of online advertising. That's good news for us all.

I've said that the future of display advertising is both smart and sexy, and publishers who produce the quality content that powers this ecosystem contribute to this bright outlook. Thanks to everyone who participated in the events in New York, or who tuned in online. If you missed my Q&A, you can watch it here.
