[G] Google+: 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99... 100.

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 04:52 AM PDT

Official Google Blog: Google+: 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99... 100.

For our international readers, this post is also available in Chinese, French, German, Italian, JapanesePortuguese, Russian and Spanish (Latin America, Spain). - Ed.

The Google+ project has been in field trial for just under 90 days, and in that time we've made 91 different improvements (many of which are posted here). Google+ is still in its infancy, of course, but we're more excited than ever to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. Today we're releasing nine more features that get us that much closer.

+Hangouts: more places, more people, more to do

Hangouts uses live video to bring people together, face-to-face-to-face. And from day one, the community has shaped and stretched the feature in amazing ways—from cooking classes to game shows to music concerts. We're determined to keep this momentum going, and to keep providing new ways to communicate in-person, so we hope you enjoy this week's round of Hangouts improvements.

92. Hangouts on your phone
In life we connect with others in all sorts of places, at all different times. And the connections you make unexpectedly are often the ones you remember the most. We think Hangouts should keep pace with how you socialize in the real-world, so today we're launching it on the one device that's always by your side: your mobile phone. To get started, simply find an active hangout in the Stream, and tap "Join":

Hangouts on your phone: Stream View (left), Green Room (center), Portrait Mode (right)

Hangouts currently supports Android 2.3+ devices with front-facing cameras (and iOS support is coming soon). The new mobile app is rolling out to Android Market today, so you can start hanging out at any time, from just about anywhere.

93. Hangouts On Air
Google+ users already use Hangouts to create intimate onscreen experiences—with family members, prayer groups, even people with certain medical conditions. But sometimes you want to speak to a large audience, or alternatively, view as a spectator. In these cases a public broadcast is what's needed, so today we're introducing Hangouts On Air.

The setup is simple enough: just start a normal hangout, and you'll have the option to broadcast and record your session. Once you're "On Air," up to nine others can join your hangout (as usual), and anyone can watch your live broadcast:

Hangouts On Air: Stream View (left), Full-screen Mode (right)

We're starting with a limited number of broadcasters, but any member of the Google+ community can tune in. In fact: we'll be hosting our very first On Air hangout with will.i.am on Wednesday night, September 21. For more information visit will.i.am's or my profile on Google+.

94, 95, 96, 97. Hangouts with extras
Spending time together goes hand in hand with actually doing things together. Dinner with family can easily turn into movie night at the local theater, for instance. And running into old friends can inspire anything from photo sharing to vacation planning. Hangouts has always included a basic set of in-room actions (like group chat and co-viewing of YouTube videos), but we want to make it easier to do a lot more. That's why we're previewing some extras, including:
  • Screensharing: for when you want to show off your vacation photos, your high score, your lesson plan or whatever else is on your screen
  • Sketchpad: for when you want to draw, doodle, or just scribble together
  • Google Docs: for when you want to write, plan or present something with others
  • Named Hangouts: for when you want to join or create a public hangout about a certain topic (like fashion or music or sports...)
Hangouts with extras: Screensharing (left), Sketchpad (right)

Hangouts with extras: Docs (left), Named Hangouts (right)

The extras are still under construction, but we wanted to preview these features and get your feedback sooner versus later. So start a hangout, click "Try Hangouts with extras" in the green room, and let us know what you think.

98. Hangouts APIs
If field trial has taught us anything about Hangouts, it's that the community is overflowing with creative individuals. So in the wake of last week's Google+ API launch, we're also releasing a basic set of Hangouts APIs. If you're a developer who wants to build new kinds of apps and games (and who-knows-what-else), then you can find more details on the Google+ platform blog.

+Search: find the people and posts you care about

99. Search in Google+
You've been asking for it, and we've been busy building it, so today we're bringing Google's search expertise to Google+. Just type what you're looking for into the Google+ search box, and we'll return relevant people and posts, as well as popular content from around the web.

If you're into photography, for example, then you'll see other enthusiasts and lots of great pictures. If you care more about cooking, then you'll see other chefs and food from around the globe. In all cases, Google+ search results include items that only you can see, so family updates are just as easy to find as international news.

Search in Google+: photography (left), cooking (right)

With more than 1 billion items shared and received every day, we're excited to see how search will connect people through their posts on Google+.

+Everyone

100. Anyone can sign up for Google+—no invitation required.
For the past 12 weeks we've been in field trial, and during that time we've listened and learned a great deal. We're nowhere near done, but with the improvements we've made so far we're ready to move from field trial to beta, and introduce our 100th feature: open signups. This way anyone can visit google.com/+, join the project and connect with the people they care about.

Over the next day we'll be rolling out all of these features globally. In the meantime, you can check out what's next in Google+.

[G] ESPN’s SportsNation is on the recruiting trail

YouTube Blog: ESPN's SportsNation is on the recruiting trail

Sports fanatics have taken to YouTube to voice their opinions as part of ESPN SportsNation Fanalyst campaign, where you have the chance to be on SportsNation every Friday. We have this week's question and invite your feedback, as you could be selected as the Fanalyst of the Week online and on-air.

This week's playbook calls for your well-informed, 15-second analysis on if Tom Brady is a lock to win the NFL's MVP award. That's right: we're two weeks into the 2011 NFL season and already the New England Patriots QB seems like everyone's runaway favorite for the NFL's top honor. Only the most original take on the Brady Bandwagon will win Fanalyst of the Week honors, so let's see what you've got.

The Sports Nation Fanalyst Contest presented by Toyota (contest rules here) will continue throughout the year, so return every Monday to SportsNationESPN to get the weekly topic from hosts Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd, and grab your 15 Seconds of Fanalyst Fame!

[G] Google Earth 6.1 now available: New features make it easier than ever to explore your world

Google LatLong: Google Earth 6.1 now available: New features make it easier than ever to explore your world

Today we are pleased to announce new features available in Google Earth. The Google Earth 6.1 update includes enhancements to make Google Earth easier than ever for both everyday users and business professionals.

Easier to use My Places
If you're like me, your growing collection of maps in the My Places panel is getting a bit unwieldy. Every time I find a great new map or upload a new GPS track, it gets a little harder to find things. With this release, we've added a couple of new features to help you clean house a bit and find things more easily. First, we've added the ability to sort a folder - just right click on any folder and choose "Sort A-Z." We've also made our My Places search feature easier to find; now all you have to do is type in the name of a map or a feature and it will highlight in the My Places panel.

You can now sort your My Places folders to improve organization.

Improved Street View
Building on the improvements we made to the Street View experience in Google Earth 6, we've now added even more Street View features, including better zoom control through the slider tool and a wider field of view similar to Google Maps. You can now also navigate from one place to another with just a single-click of the mouse. These features make Street View in Google Earth more immersive, while performance improvements create a faster, smoother overall experience.

Street View in Google Earth now has a wider field of view.

Google Earth Pro
While these features are available to all of our users, much of the work we've done in Google Earth 6.1 benefits power users and professionals who use Google Earth Pro, including:
  • Enhanced print layout: Pro users can now include scale bars and directional arrows when printing, making it easy to include all relevant information in client presentations.
  • Simplified movie maker: It's now easier to convert saved tours to video and record live actions from the 3D viewer to really bring your presentation to life.
  • Expanded data styling: Control up to 64 unique style attributes for imported datasets.
  • Improved networking infrastructure: Earth Pro 6.1 received a robust network update, which offers better support for network proxies and SSL certificates commonly found in corporate networking environments.
  • Combined elevation profiles and ruler tool: We know that sometimes distance is only one part of the equation. We've tied elevation profiles into the ruler tool, making it possible to take into account the entire 3D environment when measuring distance.
Combined ruler and elevation profile tool used to measure Yosemite's Half Dome Peak.

We hope these enhancements make it even more fun and exciting to explore the planet, wherever you are in the world. Download Google Earth 6.1 to get started.

The Google Apps Blog: Never run out of calling credit with auto-recharge

If you're calling internationally from Gmail a lot, you may have noticed that your calling credit goes a very long way... which makes it easy to get caught off guard when it runs out.

So based on your feedback, we implemented the ability to auto-recharge your account: just go to your billing page (click on the add credit link next to your balance) and select the recharge amount. When your calling credit dips under $2 or 2€ we will automatically charge your credit card on file for the selected amount.

This feature becomes available after your first purchase and can be changed or disabled at any time.

[G] Google+: 108, the +1 button is coming to display ads

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 04:08 PM PDT

Inside AdWords: Google+: 108, the +1 button is coming to display ads

Earlier today we announced several exciting new additions to Google+, including many on mobile. We'd like to announce one more addition for our AdWords advertisers, +1 on the Google Display Network.

Since its introduction on search results and search ads, the +1 button has been installed on over a million websites across the web with over 4 billion impressions daily. Starting early October we're expanding that to include display ads across the web on both desktop and mobile. For the first time, you'll be able to run social-enabled ad campaigns that work across millions of sites in over 40 countries around the world.

If you're running display ads through the Google Display Network you may begin seeing the +1 button and personal annotations with your ads. With a single click, people can recommend the ad's landing page to their friends and contacts.

Incorporating personal recommendations into display ads has the potential to change the way people view advertising. A display ad becomes much more powerful when people can see which of their friends and contacts have chosen to endorse it.

For example, take Elaine, who sees an ad for discount flights. She +1's the ad, thinking her friends might value similar deals. Now when Elaine's friends and contacts are logged into Google and see the discount flight ad on any of the millions of GDN partner websites, they'll see Elaine's picture across the bottom of the ad with a note saying she +1'd it.

On desktop, the +1 button and recommendations will appear at the bottom of display ads, then fade out until the viewer hovers over the ad. The viewer can also close the overlays by clicking the 'x'.

On mobile, the +1 button will replace the existing 'g' logo and recommendations will appear for several seconds, then fade out.

Elaine's friends and contacts will also be more likely to see the ad. Because a recommendation from a friend is such a strong signal of relevance, the Google Display Network gives ads that have been recommended an extra boost by including them in the auction for any page a friend visits. Of course, if you're targeting specific placements or audience segments (including interest categories and remarketing lists), your ads will only show on pages that match those restrictions. Additionally, your ads will never show on any placement or category on an exclusions list.

What's even better is that the +1 button on display ads will work together with +1 buttons on search results, search ads, and websites. A single +1 applies to the same content across the web, no matter where it appears.

On the Google Display Network (GDN), the +1 button will be added to image, animated GIF, Flash, Display Ad Builder ads and select mobile inventory. You can also choose to include the +1 button on your DoubleClick Rich Media ads, which can run on or off the GDN.

We're confident from our initial experience with the +1 button on search that this'll be a great addition to your GDN campaigns. However, if you're not sure that you want the +1 button and recommendations associated with your ads, starting today you can opt-out at the campaign level in AdWords under campaign settings.

To learn more about the +1 button and how it affects your ads and search results, visit our +1 button site.

[G] +1: Now making Display ads more relevant

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 04:08 PM PDT

Inside AdSense: +1: Now making Display ads more relevant

Earlier today we announced several exciting new additions to Google+, including open signups.  We'd like to announce one more addition for our AdSense publishers, +1 on the Google Display Network.

Starting in October, the +1 button will begin to appear on display ads on your site. With a single click, people will now be able to endorse specific ads and make them more likely to appear to their social connections.  We believe that these recommendations could lead your readers to notice ads on your site more, leading to more clicks and higher returns for you over time.

For example, take Susan, who sees an ad for a good deal on flights.  She +1's the ad, thinking her friends might value this deal. Now, when Susan's friends and contacts are signed in to their Google accounts, they'll be able to see Susan's picture across the bottom of the ad, with a note saying she +1'd it.

The +1 button and recommendations will appear at the bottom of display ads.

Susan's friends and contacts will also be more likely to see the ad. While the dynamics of our ad auction aren't changing, the ad will now be included in the auction for the pages Susan's friends visit, as we know recommendations from friends can be a strong signal of an ad's relevance.

+1's will be one additional signal that help determine an ad's relevance. All eligible ads will continue to compete in the ad auction, and we'll continue to show the ones that will generate the most revenue for you. +1 button clicks are not counted as clicks on ads. Although you won't receive any revenue for +1 button clicks, +1's will help AdSense to deliver more useful ads to your users, which we think will result in higher returns over time.

On mobile, the +1 button will replace the existing 'g' logo and recommendations will appear for several seconds, then fade out.

The +1 button will begin to appear on AdSense for content and AdSense for mobile content display ad formats--image, animated gif, and Flash ads. If you'd prefer not to allow the use of +1 features and social annotations on display ads on your pages, you can opt out starting today by signing in to your account at google.com/adsense.

Display ads become much more powerful when people can see which of their connections have chosen to endorse them, leading to a better advertising experience and higher returns for you.

If you'd like to learn more about the +1 button on display ads, please visit the AdSense Help Center.

[G] New home for URL channels under the My ads tab

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 04:08 PM PDT

Inside AdSense: New home for URL channels under the My ads tab

If you've logged in today, you may have noticed that you can now create and manage your URL channels under the My ads tab. Since you already manage your custom channels from the My ads tab, we hope this move will provide a more consistent experience when managing all of your channels. At the same time, you can continue to view the performance of your various channels under the Performance reports tab.

As a reminder, URL channels allow you to track earnings for your domains, subdomains or pages. With this change it's possible to create URL channels for AdSense for content, games, video, mobile AdSense for content, and AdSense for hosted content in the new interface. You can also remove or deactivate channels that you're no longer using. Learn more about URL channels.

Keep in mind that with the recent launch of the Sites report, you can now see your domain and subdomain earnings without the need to set up URL channels. For tracking page level data or any other grouping of pages, however, please feel free to continue creating URL channels.

[G] Music Tuesday: Mastodon, Warpaint and Strawburry17

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 04:08 PM PDT

YouTube Blog: Music Tuesday: Mastodon, Warpaint and Strawburry17

Austin, Texas is accustomed to hordes of music lovers descending on its streets periodically. But at this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival, you didn't need to be there to be part of it—the festival was streaming live all weekend on YouTube; check out some festival highlights now. And, just in case you didn't get your fill last weekend, we have oodles of musical goodies for you today.

Mastodon The Hunter album premiere

What is a mastodon? A massive, lumbering animal that first appeared on earth 40 million years ago. Does Mastodon, the metal band, share the same gravitas as its namesake? If you like heavy music, twin guitar squall and hard rock with a side of prog, then the answer is yes. Mastodon's fifth release jettisons the concept-album conceits of its predecessors, liberating the band to dizzying stylistic pivots that can, at their best moments, feel like small revelations (check out the song "The Ocotopus Has No Friends"). We're pleased to present their new album The Hunter in its entirety today, set to excellent visuals, a week before release.

Live Sessions on the 'Tube

It's all about the live sessions these days. Everybody's doing them, whether they're seated on the Big Ugly Yellow Couch, crammed into the studios at KCRW or KEXP, vibing out in Room 205 or rapping to a boombox on the Brooklyn bridge. This week we celebrate the beautiful diversity with exclusive live sessions from the indie band Warpaint, whom we in part love just because of their website name. (Warpaintwarpaint.com — why say it once?) This is a band that manages to sweetly brood, skirting the line of psychedelia with a kind of entrancing intensity. We also include a smattering of great live performances found on other channels. Got a suggestion for live sessions we haven't seen? Send Music Tuesday a message.

Strawburry17 Gets More Into Indie Pop

The music video creator Meghan Camarena, better known as Strawburry17, has earned herself a devoted following on YouTube for her work crafting videos for up-and-coming bands. Last week, she reached out to the community to help her get more into indie pop—and you responded in a big way. Check out her favorite picks, and dig deeper into the genre with her.

Blogger Buzz: Your images never looked so good

Introducing Lightbox, the latest in a series of Blogger updates aimed at giving you an improved and modernized blogging experience. Lightbox is a whole new way to interact with photos. When clicked, images now expand into a shiny new overlay that displays them at their full size for optimal viewing.

Once an image is opened in the lightbox view, any other images from the same post will now appear as thumbnails along the bottom, which can be easily browsed by clicking the arrow keys on the left or right side of the lightbox.

This feature is automatically enabled for all blogs, which means you can see the lightbox view in action right now by clicking one of the images below.

If you've custom-coded your image HTML so that images function as hyperlinks, then the lightbox view will not display and your original image hyperlink will work as expected.
