[G] The Philippines hosts a Summer of MapUps for disaster preparedness

Google LatLong: The Philippines hosts a Summer of MapUps for disaster preparedness

This summer, a group of Filipino mapping enthusiasts organized an impressive series of Google MapUps throughout the Philippines. The events brought together Google Map Maker mappers across the country to map their communities in preparation of natural disasters. Located in the western Pacific typhoon belt, the Philippines is struck by an average of 20 tropical cyclones every year. As demonstrated by the 2009 Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma), which left much of Metro Manila underwater, the storms are both persistent and devastating.

The extensive series of Summer MapUps was organized by mappers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao after meeting at the Google Geo User Summit in Singapore. Following in the footsteps of super mapper Rally de Leon, who mapped extensively after the 2009 typhoons, this summer of MapUps was designed as a volunteer project for the Philippine Red Cross. The objective was to map places used during crisis, including health centers, government offices, gymnasiums and public schools used for evacuation.

All of the schools (left) and hospitals (right) in the Philippines, as mapped on Google Map Maker.

The events kicked off in the Mindanao region, with MapUps in Malaybalay, Bukidnon and General Santos City. Northern Luzon followed with a MapUp in the City of Pines, Baguio City. Baguio City was hit by a devastating earthquake a decade ago, which took the lives of over a thousand people. Volunteers wanted to make sure that they tagged important places, such as evacuation relocation sites, that would help in rescue and relief.

A show of enthusiasm from mappers at the Bukidnon MapUp and live mapping in Cebu.

MapUps in Iloilo City, Metro Manila, Zamboanga and Cebu City followed. Zamboanga mappers focused on Zamboanga Peninsula, one of the least mapped areas in the Philippines. The Cebu City volunteer mappers were geology students from University of the Philippines Visayas Cebu College. They enjoyed tagging, moderating and editing data, and vowed to continue mapping to complete the Cebu map.

Even though summer is over in the Philippines, we will still continue to add map data using Google Map Maker as an effort to help the Philippine Red Cross. If you are interested in hosting a MapUp in your neighborhood, or have other great mapping ideas, be sure to visit Map Makerpedia, which brings together lessons, tutorials and use cases from around the world.

We also would like to invite you to join our community of Filipino mappers and help us by improving the map of your neighborhood on Google Map Maker. Mabuhay!

[G] Music Tuesday: Mastodon, Warpaint and Strawburry17

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:44 AM PDT

YouTube Blog: Music Tuesday: Mastodon, Warpaint and Strawburry17

Austin, Texas is accustomed to hordes of music lovers descending on its streets periodically. The difference for the 2011 Austin City Limits Music Festival is that you didn't need to be there to be part of it—the festival was streaming live all weekend on YouTube; check out some highlights. And, just in case you didn't get your fill last weekend, we have oodles of other musical goodies for you today.

Mastodon The Hunter album premiere

What is a mastodon? A massive, lumbering animal that first appeared on earth 40 million years ago. Does Mastodon, the metal band, share the same gravitas as its namesake? If you like heavy music, twin guitar squall and hard rock with a side of prog, then the answer is yes. Mastodon's fifth release jettisons the concept-album conceits of its predecessors, liberating the band to dizzying stylistic pivots that can, at their best moments, feel like small revelations (check out the song "The Ocotopus Has No Friends"). We're pleased to present their new album The Hunter in its entirety today, set to excellent visuals, a week before release.

Live Sessions on the 'Tube

It's all about the live sessions these days. Everybody's doing them, whether they're seated on the Big Ugly Yellow Couch, crammed into the studios at KCRW or KEXP, vibing out in Room 205 or rapping to a boombox on the Brooklyn bridge. This week we celebrate the beautiful diversity with exclusive live sessions from the indie band Warpaint, whom we in part love just because of their website name. (Warpaintwarpaint.com — why say it once?) This is a band that manages to sweetly brood, skirting the line of psychedelia with a kind of entrancing intensity. We also include a smattering of great live performances found on other channels. Got a suggestion for live sessions we haven't seen? Send Music Tuesday a message.

Strawburry17 Gets More Into Indie Pop

The music video creator Meghan Camarena, better known as Strawburry17, has earned herself a devoted following on YouTube for her work crafting videos for up-and-coming bands. Last week, she reached out to the community to help her get more into indie pop—and you responded in a big way. Check out her favorite picks, and dig deeper into the genre with her.

[G] Fox News/Google Debate: Digging into your questions

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:44 AM PDT

YouTube Blog: Fox News/Google Debate: Digging into your questions

With three days to go before the Fox News/Google Debate, we've seen more than 16,000 questions from all 50 states submitted to the Fox News YouTube channel. During Thursday's live event in Orlando, you'll see a selection of these questions posed to the GOP candidates live on stage. As we count down to tomorrow's midnight ET submission deadline, here's a look at the questions you want answered by the candidates bidding for the 2012 Republican nomination.

The top issues on your minds? The Government Spending & Debt and Jobs & Economy categories rank highest in question volume—not surprising with unemployment above 9 percent and a summer spent debating the debt ceiling. Health care, which dominated political chatter for the first year of Obama's presidency, now trails all other issues.

* NOTE: This chart excludes the "Other" category, which has received 26% of all questions, ranging from education to State's rights.

You also want to hear from specific candidates in the GOP field. Ten percent of the total questions received referenced a specific candidate, and of those, newcomer Gov. Rick Perry leads the pack. Outweighing all of the GOP candidates in mentions? President Obama. Questioners referenced the current president over 1,000 times, nearly twice as many times as Gov. Perry, and ten times as much as the previous president, George W. Bush.

Interest in the race spans the country and the globe, with questions submitted from Indiana to Israel, South Dakota to South Korea. In the US, the cities leading question submissions are:

  • Houston

  • Miami

  • New York

  • San Diego

  • Austin

It's not too late to submit your own question, or vote on the ones you like, at www.youtube.com/foxnews. Then, on Thursday, watch the live debate unfold there at 9pm ET, and see how the candidates respond.

[G] What’s New in DoubleClick for Publishers

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:44 AM PDT

DoubleClick Publisher Blog: What's New in DoubleClick for Publishers

We're always adding new features to DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP). We'll be periodically posting lists of the highlights to this blog to help you stay up-to-date with all of the latest DFP developments. Today, we wanted to look back over the last few months and call out some of the great new features that we've released in that time.

The list below contains some highlights. For a more complete list, please visit the DFP or DFP Small Business Help Centers.

Trafficking enhancements:
  • Postal code targeting: Advertisers spend more money on campaigns that reach the right audience. Plus, users find targeted ads more relevant and useful. We've added a new level of granularity to geo-targeting and you can now target your campaigns by zip or postal code allowing you to precisely reach users in specific markets.
  • New flash creative options: Now you can easily create flash expandables and flash pushdowns using our built in templates.
  • Test impression reporting: We know that publishers like to test their ads to ensure everything is working properly prior to pushing a campaign to their live site. The creative preview tool enables publishers to verify the look and feel of a creative on their site before it's live, but until now, publishers have not been able to test if impressions and clicks are being properly recorded. Now, when DFP receives an impression or click that it does not count because the traffic source was not a visitor to your site (for instance, an impression that you create on a test page), you'll now see a "Test impression received" or "Test click received" indicator in the trafficking screens to help you verify data is being collected.
Reporting enhancements:
  • Additional export formats: In addition to CSV, TSV, and XML, you can now export your reports directly to XLS and XLSX formats.
  • Improvements to sharing and scheduling reports: You can now invite users or contacts to view a report via email. Having a DFP account is no longer a requirement to share or view reports with your contacts. Scheduled reports can now also be sent as an email attachment and include a personalized messages to your recipients.
  • New breakdown options: We've added the ability to create a delivery report with impressions for ad units broken out by creative size.
Usability enhancements:
  • Faster and smarter search: Needless to say, search is a huge focus at Google. The same has been true for DFP where search has always been one of our most heavily used features. With our revamped search on DFP we're making it easier to find orders, line items, ad units, and placements using the search box at the top left of any screen.
  • Improved report navigation: The rows in your reports now remain fixed in place as you scroll across columns, making it easier to view and identify information when a report contains a large number of columns. Columns are now grouped into higher-level headings that make them easier to identify (for example, Ad server, Order details, AdSense, or Ad Exchange).
  • New breakouts in competing line items table: When viewing a list of competing line items, your listis now broken out into two categories to help you better understand the effect the line item has on its competition. Your view is now broken out by: (1) the impressions lost to competing line items and (2) impressions gained from competing line items.

[G] Launching Google Wallet on Sprint and Working with Visa, American Express and Discover

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:44 AM PDT

Official Google Mobile Blog: Launching Google Wallet on Sprint and Working with Visa, American Express and Discover

(cross-posted on Official Google Blog and Google Commerce Blog)

In May we announced Google Wallet—an app that makes your phone your wallet—with Citi, MasterCard, Sprint and First Data. With Google Wallet, you can tap, pay and save using your phone and near field communication (NFC).

We've been testing it extensively, and today we're releasing the first version of the app to Sprint. That means we're beginning to roll out Google Wallet to all Sprint Nexus S 4G phones through an over-the-air update—just look for the "Wallet" app. Here's a demo of Google Wallet in action:

Google Wallet enables you to pay with your Citi MasterCard credit card and the Google Prepaid Card, which can be funded with any of your existing plastic credit cards. As a thanks to early adopters, we're adding a $10 free bonus to the Google Prepaid Card if you set it up in Google Wallet before the end of the year.

When we announced Google Wallet, we pledged a commitment to an open commerce ecosystem. We appreciate Citi and MasterCard for being our launch partners. And today, Visa, Discover and American Express have made available their NFC specifications that could enable their cards to be added to future versions of Google Wallet.

Our goal is to make it possible for you to add all of your payment cards to Google Wallet, so you can say goodbye to even the biggest traditional wallets. In fact, we've got a video of our first customer, someone who is ready to replace his famously over-stuffed wallet. We hope Google Wallet gives him "serenity now."

This is still just the beginning and while we're excited about this first step, we look forward to bringing Google Wallet to more phones in the future. You can learn more about Google Wallet at google.com/wallet.

[G] Open source code meets law at Hack4Transparency

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:44 AM PDT

Google Open Source Blog: Open source code meets law at Hack4Transparency

What do you call a group of talented hackers in the European Parliament for a 24-hour window, enjoying free food while improving data transparency? We call it Hack4Transparency, and it's not your everyday hackathon. Google is proud to be one of the sponsors of this upcoming event, a code sprint this November 8-9 that, literally, brings code to law. This is the first ever hacking event within the premises of European government, taking place in the heart of Brussels and giving dedicated hackers an opportunity to bring the power of good code to the place where it can matter most.

Over the course of 24 hours, hackers will work to make data more accessible and intelligible to consumers, to government, and to anyone who's interested in the state of Internet access and information availability around the world.

Hackers will work along two tracks. The Internet Quality track focuses on making broadband performance data meaningful to the average consumer by improving the user interfaces of existing broadband measurement tools. The Global Transparency track asks hackers to take data from existing sources including Google's Transparency Report, the Open Net Initiative, and Herdict, and using these sources to create compelling visualizations showing what type of Internet content is available or unavailable to users.

There will be free food, free WiFi, and the opportunity to win prizes while working with a lot of cool people dedicated to making big improvements.

Applicants that are selected to attend will have their travel and accommodations covered, and winning hackers on each track will receive €3.000.

If you're an EU-based hacker and you want fun, food, a free vacation, and the opportunity to make a big impact, we invite you to apply.

The deadline for applications is Monday, October 10, noon CET.
