[G] Map Maker Turns to the Locals with the Regional Expert Reviewer Program

Google LatLong: Map Maker Turns to the Locals with the Regional Expert Reviewer Program

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention, as Google Map Maker has experienced time and again. Following a momentous 2009 launch in Eastern Europe, Map Maker mappers hit the ground running, particularly in Romania, and with each public map edit requiring reviewing, our internal reviewers could hardly keep up. This extreme mapping was a happy problem for Google, and in seeking a solution, we turned to the real experts: our local users. After a time of quiet experimenting, and reinforced enthusiasm from users at the Singapore Geo Summit, the Map Maker team is pleased to announce our Regional Expert Reviewer program, giving distinguished mappers increased reviewing capabilities within their state, country, or region of expertise around the world.

Map Maker invites users to make their mark on the world map (Singapore Geo Summit).

Our Regional Expert Reviewers earned their appointed positions by making an impressive number of high quality contributions to Google's base map, and by actively participating with Google and other mappers on our Map Your World discussion forums. Much as Google reviewers are differentiated by a 'G' icon next to their username in Google Map Maker, you can recognize a Regional Expert Reviewer by an 'R' icon next to his or her username when they review your edits. These moderators are located all around the world, and the Map Maker team is thrilled to be working alongside such expert mappers to ensure our quality of reviews remain high in our ongoing effort to build better maps.

They've got the whole world in their hands! Some of our Map Maker Advocates, now also Regional Expert Reviewers, at the Singapore Geo Summit in April 2011.

Map Maker is rooted in the belief that local knowledge is essential to creating accurate maps, this is the very reason we put mapping in users' hands. They can be reassured that their edits may be reviewed by other locals who are familiar with their area and are invested in the quality of mapping around their community. Additionally, all Map Maker contributors can, at any time, review and comment on the edits in their communities. After all, contributors know their neighborhood better than anyone else. Now, their reviewers can, too.

Inside AdSense: Join us at GDC Online in Austin

This year the Google AdSense team will be attending the Games Developer Conference Online (GDC Online) expo on October 10th, 11th and 12th in Austin, Texas.

As part of the GDC Online, we'll be hosting Google Developer Day where we'll share ways in which publishers can use AdSense and AdMob to monetize their online games, websites and mobile applications. After our session, we're looking forward to chatting with publishers and developers at the conference, and we'll also be available at the Google booth to discuss and demo our AdSense for Games, AdSense for Content and AdMob products.

If you have an online flash game or mobile app and are interested in the potential of earning revenue from ads, we hope you'll be able to join us on Google Developer Day and visit our booth on the expo floor.  For more information on our presence at GDC Online, including session and speaker details, please visit the event site or read our related post on the Google code blog.

Hope to see you in Austin!

[G] Comment-only access in Google documents

The Google Apps Blog: Comment-only access in Google documents

In the past several months, we've added new discussion and commenting features to improve collaboration in Google documents. As an engineer, I often create docs with design concepts and send them to my team to review and provide feedback, and we use the commenting features to facilitate these discussions. Sometimes, I want to let team members view and make comments without allowing them to directly edit my document.

Over the next several days, we're releasing a new sharing option so that you can let people view and add comments to your documents without giving them edit access. To give comment-only access to your document, click on the Share button. From there, add in the contact you'd like to share your document with, and select Can comment.

You can also choose to give comment-only access to anyone with the link or anyone on the web by changing the sharing settings within the document. To do this, click Change in the sharing settings window and change visibility options to Public on the web or Anyone with the link, then change the access options to Can comment.

Similarly, if you're using a Google Apps account, click Change in the sharing settings and select either "People at who have the link can access" or "People at can find and access." Then change access option to Can comment.

Users that have comment-only access can view your document and add comments throughout -- without being able to change the content of the document directly.

We hope this latest feature in discussions helps you get the feedback you need while providing you with more control over the content in your docs. So comment away and tell us what you think -- below or in the forum.
