Posted: 12 Feb 2011 01:52 AM PST Inside Google Books: Terms of EndearmentPosted by Ryan Sands, Google Books Online TeamThroughout history, a wide variety of romantic nicknames have passed through the lips of lovers. Many of these are inspired by and reflected in literature. Romeo called Juliet "my sweet," Rhett called Scarlett "my dear" and Torvald Helmer called Nora "my little lark". Whether you call your main squeeze "stud muffin" or "sweetie pie," you can now find out when your favorite terms of endearment came into vogue and fell out of fashion through the Google Books Ngram Viewer. (The Viewer reveals that "sweetie pie" has grown steadily since the mid-30's while "stud muffin" was last to the love party when it appeared in the late 1980s.) Comb through more than 500 billion words from more than 5.2 million books spanning from 1500 to 2006 with a few taps and a click. Want to see the words in heart-fluttering context? Click the corresponding links in the table beneath the line graph to browse inside the books where your search terms were found. Looking for a popular term from a romance language? Très bien! With seven languages including French, you can trace "mon amour," "ma belle," "mon cher" and "mon amie" back to the 1800s. So no matter what you call your sweetheart this Valentine's Day, impress him or her by knowing the literary history behind your favorite terms of endearment. [G] UseR Meetup at Google San Francisco Posted: 12 Feb 2011 12:59 AM PST Google Open Source Blog: UseR Meetup at Google San FranciscoEarlier this week, Google hosted the Bay Area useR Group at our San Francisco office. Over 40 attendees showed up to hear Dylan Beaudette from UC Davis give a presentation about investigating soil genesis and geography with R (PDF). Dylan has been using R to study and visualize large amounts of soil data and has made his routines available in the aqp: Algorithms for Quantitative Pedology package on CRAN.Dylan's research also utilizes a number of Google technologies, such as Google Earth KMZ overlays of soil data and the Google Ngram Viewer for tracking Temporal Trends in Soil Science Jargon. In addition to open source and soil science, there were lively discussions at the meetup about reproducible research and the data sharing problem. I'd like to thank our speaker, Dylan, all of the attendees, the Bay Area useR organizers who continue to put together interesting talks each month, and the Google Open Source Program Office for hosting the event. We're looking forward to the R User Conference in England in August and more local Bay Area Meetups in the interim. [G] This week in search 2/11/11 Posted: 11 Feb 2011 06:38 PM PST Official Google Blog: This week in search 2/11/11This is part of a regular series of posts on search experience updates that runs on Fridays. Look for the label "This week in search" and subscribe to the series. - Ed.With features like Instant, the dynamic left-hand panel of tools, voice search and Google Goggles, search is becoming more interactive all the time. You don't just type and query and hit enter: you can speak your search query, and whether typing or speaking, you can search in a kind of conversation, with the results and search tools updating dynamically based on just a few characters. This week's changes all continue to make Google more interactive and responsive to your intentions, whether you're looking for a vector graphic file for a presentation, getting Google Instant results or looking for a fun distraction in the middle of the workday. Instant satellite and terrain maps on Google results We love the satellite and terrain views you can get in Google Earth and Maps, but shouldn't you be able to get those views right away on the results page without having to click through to Maps and then click the "satellite" or "terrain" option? Well now, when you're looking for these specialized map views, you'll get them instantly on your main results page. For example, if you search for [honolulu satellite map], you'll see the city's lush green interior and deep blue ocean right in your search results. Click the map to jump directly to a larger view. Example searches: [satellite map of moscow], [yosemite terrain map] New ways to find Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) files Scalable Vector Graphics (SVGs) are files that describe how to draw the basic elements needed to create an image: elements like lines, circles, polygons and more complex shapes. Unlike the images typically returned by most search engines (for example, JPG, GIF and PNG), SVGs can be stretched to any size without the quality of the image suffering. This makes them ideally suited for things like clip art, maps, logos, flags and scientific diagrams. In December, we announced we were starting to return SVGs in our results; more recently, we made it possible to refine your search to exclusively return SVGs. Click "Images" in the left-hand panel, then "Advanced Search" and then select the SVG filetype. If you want to impress your friends, you can also add "filetype:svg" to any normal search, such as [graph theory filetype:svg]: Example searches: [world map filetype:svg], [flag filetype:svg] Chrome Instant ready for prime time If you haven't yet tried Instant on Chrome, now is a great time to check it out. Instant on Chrome arrived in the stable build last Thursday, which means it's ready for prime time. Chrome brings the Instant experience to a whole new level—not just search results, but also webpages begin loading as soon as you start typing. To try it out, download the latest release and enable Instant in the "Basics" tab of Chrome's options. Celebrating Jules Verne's birthday by diving into the depths We've been having fun with some unique and interactive doodles lately, and this week was no exception. On Monday visitors to Google were invited to navigate the Nautilus and dive down into the depths. Pull the lever or tilt your computer (side note: who knew my laptop had an accelerometer?) and the Nautilus will follow. If you missed the doodle, you can still play with the underlying graphic in full view and HD! It turns out you can do a lot of wild things on Google...you can talk to it and, sometimes, you can play games right on our homepage—but at the end of the day, the most important thing you can do is find the best answer to your question. [G] On the Rise: We need your votes! Posted: 11 Feb 2011 02:11 PM PST YouTube Blog: On the Rise: We need your votes!Another month, another crop of talented video-makers! February's On the Rise nominees are in, and we need you to check out the four nominees below and choose your favorite. Cast your vote in the top right-hand corner of this blog. Here's how On the Rise works. We identify channels who've gained a lot of subscribers in the past 30 days but haven't yet reached the 100,000 mark. You vote on your favorite, and we feature the winner on the YouTube homepage and the videos page, Facebook and Twitter. Past winners like emilynoel83, justjesse197 and joshsundquist have seen their subscriber numbers jump, thanks to your support. This month we're featuring four channels that have been moving from a simmer to a boil -- and for good reason! Check them out, and don't forget to cast your vote by February 16, 2011, so we can feature the winner on the homepage on February 23. fouradipuntnl Pop music (and good-looking guys) need no translation. These two Moroccan-Dutch brothers formed the hip-hop group Fouradi back in 2009, and in 2010 their single "1 Ding" scaled the Dutch charts. Their YouTube channel has also garnered mad love. RMG209 Graphic designer and heavy metal DJ Rick Gurnsey is the mastermind behind this genuinely comic, self-described "creepy" animated series. Once you start watching, it's very hard to stop; imagine a Simpsons in which every character is Mr. Burns, and you're partway there. theDOMINICshow Dominic "d-trix" Sandoval has turned his life into a one-man show. He'll teach you to rap, he'll spoof the Bieber phenomenon, he'll sing (sardonically) the praises of mother's milk. On theDOMINICshow, nothing is sacred, but just about everything is funny. TornadoVideosdotnet Reed Timmer has made a living chasing and filming tornadoes, and we're willing passengers on his wild ride. When he's not running away from an oncoming twister, he's filming the gorgeous weather that's about to produce one. Warning: not for the adrenaline-phobic. If you're inspired by what you see here, check out other awesome, up-and-coming channels. Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:22 AM PST Official Google Enterprise Blog: Go Google in record speedOver three million businesses have gone Google to help their employees become more productive, and more companies, schools and other organizations are coming onboard at a record clip. We love hearing stories from customers that switch to Google Apps over their lunch break, but still we know we can make it even easier for organizations to transition. This week we simplified the process for administrators with a brand new setup wizard. Now when you sign up for Google Apps, the setup wizard will greet you in the administrative control panel. The interactive guide can walk you through all the key configuration options, from creating user accounts to activating email, migrating your existing data to Google Apps and configuring mobile devices. Whether you want to test the waters with a group of pilot users or you're ready to fully deploy today, the setup wizard will help you manage the roll-out strategy that's best for your organization. The wizard includes progress indicators so that you can easily come back to the setup tab to continue where you left off. So if you recently signed up, are a seasoned administrator, or are just considering Google Apps, check out the new setup wizard. We'll be adding more content on an ongoing basis, so you may find it helpful even if you've already made the switch to Google Apps. Google Apps resellers can also use the guide to streamline deployments while developing a customized deployment plan for their customers if needed. [G] Going Google across the 50 States: Missouri consulting firm removes communication barriers Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:22 AM PST Official Google Enterprise Blog: Going Google across the 50 States: Missouri consulting firm removes communication barriersEditor's note: Over 3 million businesses have adopted Google Apps. Today we'll hear from Tom Dey, co-Founder of DeyFischer Consulting in Missouri. To learn more about other organizations that have gone Google and share your story, visit our community map or test drive life in the cloud with the Go Google cloud calculator.A typical day for a DeyFischer consultant doesn't often involve our corporate offices, and they're rarely in the same city as the week before. Our more than 50 consultants are out in the field, working side-by-side with clients around the world to deliver SAP business solutions. Back at our headquarters in Missouri, and SAP retail office in Atlanta, we have DeyFischer business managers, recruiters and an administrative team – but no IT personnel on staff. At any given time across the company, we're operating in dozens of countries and time zones. Before Google Apps, we were using a variety of different email clients and calendar systems – it was a free-for-all when it came to which office tools individuals wanted to use. Supporting all these tools was very labor-intensive. Our administrative team had to send each new consultant instructions on how to set up their email client so we could forward DeyFischer email to them. Corporate contacts and calendars, which are vital in our business, were sent out only once a month because sharing them was so cumbersome. With Google Apps, communication is seamless and our administrative team can go back to its core job: driving revenue for the company, rather than serving as a help desk. To set up Google Apps, we worked with Umzuzu, a Google Apps Authorized Reseller. Umzuzu designed a strategy to help us transition to the cloud that included migrating old emails and comprehensive training for all employees. The whole process was painless and during it all, we had no downtime or lost emails – which our employees were grateful for! Part of the transition included migrating our more than 3,500 contacts over to Google Apps. With advice and technical support from Umzuzu, we implemented Floreysoft's Shared Contacts application from the Google Apps Marketplace. It's integrated directly with Google Apps so when someone at DeyFischer adds a contact to the database, it's immediately available to consultants across the company. With Google Apps, communications have changed for the better and employees are now more productive in the office and on the road where they can easily access email, calendar and other important documents on their laptops or mobile phones. Scheduling is even easier with many consultants using Google Calendar to send meeting invitations directly to their clients. We're growing fast and Google Apps is helping us keep up the pace. Unlike before, email accounts are now created quickly and easily, and new employees are directed to a welcome site created with Google Sites. This frees the management and administrative teams to focus on hiring exceptional consultants rather than on-boarding new ones. Google Apps is helping us expand and reach new heights.
