[G] YouTube wins case against Viacom Posted: 24 Jun 2010 02:52 AM PDT Google Public Policy Blog: YouTube wins case against ViacomPosted by Kent Walker, Vice President and General Counsel, Google(Cross-posted from The Official YouTube Blog) Today, the court granted our motion for summary judgment in Viacom's lawsuit with YouTube. This means that the court has decided that YouTube is protected by the safe harbor of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) against claims of copyright infringement. The decision follows established judicial consensus that online services like YouTube are protected when they work cooperatively with copyright holders to help them manage their rights online. This is an important victory not just for us, but also for the billions of people around the world who use the web to communicate and share experiences with each other. We're excited about this decision and look forward to renewing our focus on supporting the incredible variety of ideas and expression that billions of people post and watch on YouTube every day around the world. UPDATE: This decision also applies to other parties to the lawsuit, including the Premier League. URL: http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2010/06/youtube-wins-case-against-viacom.html |

[G] Make money with Google Sites and Google AdSense Posted: 23 Jun 2010 08:04 PM PDT Official Google Docs Blog: Make money with Google Sites and Google AdSenseIf you have a public site built on Google Sites, you might be interested in earning revenue with Google AdSense. AdSense allows website publishers such as yourself to show targeted ads on their sites and earn revenue from their traffic. It also helps visitors find things they may be interested in based on the content of those sites. Over 1 million publishers use AdSense to monetize the content on the sites they've worked so hard to build.AdSense shows ads relevant to the content of the site and you can easily customize the look and feel of the ads to match your site. For example, if your site is about fashion, you may show ads for shoe designers or clothing stores. If a page on your site is about cars, you may see ads for car dealerships or auto shops on that page. Using filters, you can control the content of the ads you display by choosing to block categories of ads or even specific advertisers. With the free suite of powerful AdSense reporting tools, you can pull detailed reports that will help you track your revenue and identify opportunities to earn more money. [G] Introducing multi-domain support in Google Apps Posted: 23 Jun 2010 07:22 PM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Introducing multi-domain support in Google AppsThousands of organizations deploy Google Apps every day, and a challenge for some large businesses has been migrating employees on multiple domains. Until now, companies that ran into this issue could either set up other domains as domain aliases or set up different Google Apps accounts for each domain, neither of which was an ideal solution. Now there's a better way: multi-domain support in Google Apps.Multi-domain support is a new admin control that allows organizations with two or more domains on Google Apps to manage them from a single control panel. Users belonging to different domains within an organization keep their domain-specific email address but can see coworkers from other domains in the organization's global address book. It's also easy for users to share across domains in Google Docs, Sites and the rest of Google Apps. Matt Vandenbush, director of IT strategy and architecture at Brady Corporation, says, "Multi-domain support in Google Apps lets us administer our entire organization from one central place. Considering that we have users on 88 different domains, this is a big time-saver for our IT department, and it lets employees from different parts of our organization share information much more seamlessly than before." This feature is available now to Premier and Education edition users at no additional charge. To learn more about multi-domain support on Google Apps, please visit our Help Center or join us for a live webinar on Tuesday, July 13th at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT. Posted: 23 Jun 2010 03:46 PM PDT Official Google Blog: Celebrating AndroidToday, Verizon and Motorola announced the newest device powered by Android at an event in New York. We were thrilled to be there, and humbled by what our partners have been able to accomplish with Android. Every day 160,000 Android-powered devices are activated -- that's nearly two devices every second, used for the first time by people from New York to New Zealand.Android started with one simple idea: Provide a powerful, open mobile platform to drive faster innovation for the benefit of consumers. This idea has come to life around the world. Today, there are 60 compatible Android devices, delivered via a global partnership network of 21 OEMs and 59 carriers in 49 countries. The volume and variety of Android devices continues to exceed even our most optimistic expectations. In some instances, Android devices are selling faster than they can be manufactured. To celebrate, we are open-sourcing the new 2.2 version of Android, which we call Froyo, to our partners who manufacture Android devices around the world. Customers will enjoy great new features and improved browser performance. And developers will benefit from new tools such as Android cloud-to-device messaging (which makes it easier for mobile applications to sync data). We want to thank our partners for joining us in our vision, for creating such compelling devices, and for continuing to push the limits of what is possible in a smartphone. [G] Google Summer of Code 2010 San Francisco Meetup Posted: 23 Jun 2010 03:34 PM PDT Google Open Source Blog: Google Summer of Code 2010 San Francisco MeetupCarol Smith and Cat Allman (5th and 1st from right) with with meetup participants We started the event off just after 3 PM with introductions and some background info on the 2010 projects. There were two 2008 Google Summer of Code alums in attendance: João Antunes, who worked on a file transfer protocol for SIP Communicator and myself (John Britton), who worked on a localization server for Gallery. João and I shared our advice on succeeding in Google Summer of Code. We each gave short demonstrations of our projects and some background to put them in context. We also fielded tough questions on how to make sure to set reasonable expectations for mentors and deliver on promised goals. After talking about the program, I took the floor to talk a bit about projects that I've been working on recently. I started by giving an interactive demo of Twilio and explaining how my experience duiring Google Summer of Code was instrumental in getting a job there. The program was especially good for preparing me to work on building the community around our first open source project, OpenVBX. After I finished up talking about community building, I shared an update on Mozilla's Drumbeat initiative which naturally segued into a discussion on P2PU and the School of Webcraft. The team from Scripped followed me by giving some advice on the importance of communication in software projects and on managing expectations. Last but not least, we got an official tour of the Google San Francisco office. Tour highlights included a pit stop in the micro-kitchen, a chance to ride the Google slide, and a giant Android phone. We rounded out the day with a trip to a pub on the waterfront overlooking the Bay Bridge. Overall, it was a pretty sweet day. Check out the Google Summer of Code Flickr Group Pool for more photos. [G] Minor Style Updates, Major Improvements Posted: 23 Jun 2010 12:54 PM PDT Google LatLong: Minor Style Updates, Major ImprovementsSometimes, little things can make a big difference. Since our last major style evolution, we have been making ongoing incremental improvements to the style of our maps. We'd like to highlight a few of the more recent changes and show the impact of paying attention to the small details.Starting with the area close to our office in Sydney, you can see that we've made roads thinner and more discernible, and improved treatment of tunnels so they don't look so much like they're above ground: In Taichung, Taiwan, our roads used to overlap in some places. We've fixed that, making the map more navigable and providing a better sense of the city structure: Here's another example from Bangalore, India. The new version manages to both add detail and feel easier to read: And finally, in Prague, Czech Republic, you can see the improvement in our styling of building models, which makes the map less overwhelming and the road labels easier to read: We hope that you have enjoyed this quick tour - have a look around Google Maps today and see if you notice any improvements to your local area. [G] Magnets to the masses: attracting customers to your business with YouTube Posted: 23 Jun 2010 10:59 AM PDT Official Google Blog: Magnets to the masses: attracting customers to your business with YouTubeThis post is the latest in our Small Business series about entrepreneurship and the various Google tools you can use to establish and improve your business presence on the Internet. Here, you'll learn how, with only a digital camera and a small budget, you can use YouTube to drive sales and engage your potential customers. -Ed.When you go to YouTube, you often see ads from big brand advertisers—a homepage ad or a display campaign running across the site. But many small business owners also use YouTube to reach their customers with videos about their products and services. While there are lots of different types of ads that small businesses can run on YouTube, sometimes the best way to show off your brand or product is to simply create a great video. Terrence Kelleman, founder of Dynomighty Design, has made YouTube videos the centerpiece of his company's marketing strategy, so I've invited him to share his thoughts about how he grew his business using YouTube. In 2001, I was working my day job as a digital photographer for e-commerce at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) when I found several prototypes for a product that were being thrown out. The plastic elements had magnets inside them, and as I broke them open and put the magnets on my desk, they suddenly shot together to form a straight line. Playing with the magnets, I realized I could make jewelry that was held together by magnetic force alone. This chance discovery was the first step on the road to starting my own company, Dynomighty, which sells magnetic jewelry and other creative products. [G] Updated: Accurate Post Preview and New Video Player Posted: 23 Jun 2010 06:33 AM PDT Blogger Buzz: Updated: Accurate Post Preview and New Video PlayerYou might have already noticed that in addition to the Blogger Template Designer, we added some other new features in our recent release.First, the accurate post preview, a feature that's been available on Blogger in Draft, is now available to everyone. Before you publish a post, you may want to preview your post to see how it will actually look to your readers, in the same format and style of your current Blogger theme. To try it, click the Preview button on the New Post page. You will see a new window open with the accurate preview of the post. We also introduced a new video player that's based on the YouTube player. The new Blogger video player allows full-screen viewing -- now visitors can watch videos that you published on your blog in full-screen mode. The new player also features a better user interface, such as animated seekbar (the red bar along the bottom of the video) and bigger buttons. You can also right-click on the player to see more information about the video, such as playback performance ("Show Video Info") or network speed ("Take Speed Test"). Note that despite the new video player, the videos you upload to Blogger are still only visible on your blog, not on YouTube. As always, please send your suggestions and feedback through the Blogger User Forum. Thanks for using Blogger! URL: http://buzz.blogger.com/2010/06/updated-accurate-post-preview-and-new.html |
