[G] GoogleServe 2010: Celebrating community service worldwide Posted: 22 Jun 2010 08:27 PM PDT Official Google Blog: GoogleServe 2010: Celebrating community service worldwideThis month, Googlers around the world participated in GoogleServe—an annual event in which Google employees take a break from their day jobs to re-connect with local communities and give back through service projects. Over 6,000 Googlers from 65 offices in 27 countries spent time in activities ranging from helping the elderly get online and consulting with organizations on their social-media strategies to tidying up public parks and playing with dogs waiting to be rehomed.GoogleServe began in 2008 as an employee-driven initiative and is organized almost entirely by volunteers. For the 2010 event, we partnered with hundreds of community organizations, schools and governments to help meet local needs around the world. Here's a taste of some of this year's projects:

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 08:27 PM PDT Official Google Blog: Google Voice for everyone(Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog)A little over a year ago, we released an early preview of Google Voice, our web-based platform for managing your communications. We introduced one number to ring all your phones, voicemail that works like email, free calls and text messages to the U.S. and Canada, low-priced international calls and more—the only catch was you had to request and receive an invite to try it out. Today, after lots of testing and tweaking, we're excited to open up Google Voice to the public, no invitation required. Over the past year, we've introduced a mobile web app, an integrated voicemail player in Gmail, the ability to use Google Voice with your existing number and more. Over a million of you are now actively using Google Voice, and many of the features released over the past year (like SMS to email and our Chrome extension) came as a result of your suggestions, so thanks! If you haven't yet tried Google Voice, we can't wait for you to try it out and let us know what you think. Check out our revamped features page to learn about everything Google Voice can do, and if you haven't seen it yet, this video provides a good overview in less than two minutes: We're proud of the progress we've made with Google Voice over the last few years, and we're still just scratching the surface of what's possible when you combine your regular phone service with the latest web technology. It's even more amazing to think about how far communication has come over the last couple hundred years. To put things in context, we created this infographic to visualize some recent history of human communication and how Google Voice uses the web to help people communicate in more ways than ever before (click the image for a larger version): Update 10:53AM: Just to clarify, though we've opened up sign-ups, Google Voice is still limited to everyone in the U.S. for now. [G] Vote for the international “I love football” Doodle 4 Google winner Posted: 22 Jun 2010 08:27 PM PDT Official Google Blog: Vote for the international "I love football" Doodle 4 Google winnerIn April, we invited young artists in 17 countries to create a Google doodle based on the theme "I love football." Since then, more than 35,000 children in Australia, Germany, Ghana, South Korea, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Kenya, UAE and Israel have created original designs for this first-ever international doodling competition. From footballs to goalposts, we saw some truly creative designs that prove just how much you can do with an "l," an "e," and a couple "o's" and "g's." In the past two weeks, the winner of each country's competition had their design shown on their country's homepage for a day. Now, we need help deciding which of these top doodlers' artwork will be featured on the Google homepage of all 17 participating countries on July 11. You can vote for the international winner from June 21 until June 28—visit this site to weigh in. The winning doodler will receive a trip to South Africa for themselves and their family, offered by the South Africa Tourism Board. And the runner-up will win two VIP tickets to a Premiere League football match in the U.K. offered by Sports New Media. So whether you're an art lover or a football lover—vote for your favorite doodle today! Posted by Anat S. [G] Optical character recognition (OCR) in Google Docs Posted: 22 Jun 2010 04:23 PM PDT Official Google Docs Blog: Optical character recognition (OCR) in Google DocsA couple of months ago, my co-worker, Mike, showed up at my desk with a pile of paper, each of the yellowed sheets densely covered with an ancient-looking typewriter font. His wife had recently discovered parts of her family chronicles in the attic, typed up by her grandmother many years ago! Now he was wondering if there was a way for her to continue writing the chronicles in Google Docs. The papers sat on my desk for a while, but recently, I returned them to Mike with a smile, cheerfully telling him that what started as my 20% project is now ready for everyone to use -- Google Docs now officially supports importing scanned documents. What we launched as an experimental feature for the Documents List Data API last year is now available on the upload page: check the "Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents", upload your scanned images (JPEG, GIF, PNG) or PDFs, and Google Docs will extract text and formatting from the scans for you to edit away. For the technically curious: we're using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that our friends from Google Books helped us set up. OCR works best with high-resolution images, and not all formatting may be preserved. The original images will be included in the new document to make it easier for you to correct mistakes. Supported languages include English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, with more languages and character sets on their way. We're looking forward to get feedback from you while we keep improving the feature over the next months. And Mike's scanned family chronicles have even been extended by an additional chapter in Google Docs: his wife recently had a baby boy named James! [G] Google Maps for Android Helps You Find the Right Place, Catch a Train, and Add Latitude Friends Posted: 22 Jun 2010 12:51 PM PDT Official Google Mobile Blog: Google Maps for Android Helps You Find the Right Place, Catch a Train, and Add Latitude FriendsHot off the presses, Google Maps for Android version 4.3 has added a couple new features to help you quickly choose the right place to grab dinner, catch the next train, and find friends to add in Latitude.Have you ever had to make a split decision for dinner plans while on the go? Now, you can see a snapshot of what people are saying about places right on search result pages. Instead of pouring through full reviews, you can start by looking at what the most frequently mentioned aspects about a place are, such as food, service, atmosphere, or anything else people keep mentioning. Just like on Place Pages for your computer, the color-coded bar gives an overview of how positively people are talking about any individual aspect. Tap one to see more details like the actual review snippets. Whether you're looking for top-notch service or a vibrant ambiance, you can now pick just the right place to go. You'll also find a new addition to public transit station pages: upcoming schedules. Select any transit station icon directly from the map and open its page by tapping the window. You'll find a handy list of the next departure times for any subways, trains, or buses that are leaving from that station where transit info is available. In Google Latitude, we wanted to make it even easier for you to find friends and family with whom you'd like to share your location. Right at the bottom of your Latitude friend list, you'll be able to quickly start sharing your location with long lost friends, loved ones, and others from your Google Contacts. Add any suggested friends by tapping the + icon and sending them a sharing request. Tap the x and they'll be dropped from your suggested friends list. Don't worry -- you can always add them later by choosing "Add friends" from the Latitude menu. Get the latest version of Maps by searching for Google Maps in Android Market from Android 1.6+ phones. If you're reading this on your phone, just tap here. Version 4.3 is available in all the countries and languages where Maps is currently available. Visit our Help Center to learn more, ask questions in our Help Forum, or give us suggestions and vote on other people's on the Mobile Product Ideas page. [G] “Annyeong Haseyo! “안녕하세요” to Google Search by Voice in Korean Posted: 22 Jun 2010 12:51 PM PDT Official Google Mobile Blog: "Annyeong Haseyo! "안녕하세요" to Google Search by Voice in KoreanThe creation of the Korean alphabet by Sejong the Great was a wonderful advance, enabling literacy for the masses. However, even with the latest smartphone keyboards, entering the characters of the Korean alphabet is still challenging. Less than two weeks ago we announced Google Search by Voice in French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and today we are happy to announce support for Korean. Google Search by Voice in action on Android and iPhone Google Search by Voice will be available soon, pre-installed, on the Samsung Galaxy S and the Nexus One. It is also accessible in the Android Market and via Google Mobile App for the BlackBerry and the iPhone. [G] Changes to reporting in AdWords Posted: 22 Jun 2010 12:32 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Changes to reporting in AdWordsThe Report Center is full of helpful data, but effective campaign management needs to combine insights and control. That's why we've moved a number of reports from the Report Center directly into the Campaigns tab. Now you can use AdWords to see the search terms and automatic placements where your ads appeared, segment your data by things like keyword match type and day of week, and email and schedule downloads of the data you want to share. You can do it all on the same pages where you manage your campaigns, making finding key performance drivers (and acting on your discoveries) faster and easier. With so much useful data available within the Campaigns tab, the AdWords Report Center is no longer the best place to find new reports. So, in order to build the most useful reporting tools possible, we plan to gradually move the existing reports from the Report Center into the Campaigns tab, then retire the Report Center entirely. Here's how the changes will work:
These changes will only affect the Report Center for individual accounts. My Client Center reports and reports for TV ads won't change with the transition. So, how should you prepare?
If you have any feedback on the changes, please send it our way. Look forward to additional blog posts on new reporting functionality in the near future. And above all, dig into that data! [G] More room to compose messages in Gmail on the iPad Posted: 22 Jun 2010 11:29 AM PDT Official Gmail Blog: More room to compose messages in Gmail on the iPadPosted by Craig Wilkinson, Software EngineerIf you've been using the web-based version of Gmail on the iPad, you may have noticed that yesterday you started to have a big, full screen compose window for writing messages. Instead of splitting the screen between your inbox and the compose view, we updated the interface to hide the inbox messages on the side and make more of the text you're working on visible at once. To try out Gmail on the iPad, just go to gmail.com in Safari. Please note that the new interface is only available in US English for now. For more info, check out this post on the Mobile blog. [G] Chrome extensions for Google Docs Posted: 22 Jun 2010 08:44 AM PDT Official Google Docs Blog: Chrome extensions for Google DocsSix months ago, we launched the Chrome extension, Google Docs PDF/Powerpoint Viewer, that allows you to preview PDFs and Powerpoint presentations in your Google Chrome browser without having to download them. With more than 400,000 users, the Google Docs PDF/Powerpoint Viewer extension has become one of the most popular extensions in the Chrome Extensions gallery.
