[G] Our newest Mobile Search feature: Where am I? Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:51 AM PDT Official Google Mobile Blog: Our newest Mobile Search feature: Where am I?Many of our improvements to search quality come from analyzing actual search queries. We're constantly trying to surface more relevant search results in as many situations as we can. Well, I'm happy to announce that for those of you who turn to Google in search of, "where am I," we finally have a better result. Starting today, just go to Google.com on your phone in the US, search for "where am I", and wonder about your own whereabouts no more. Note that in this alpha release, we are finding that our results can be slightly off. However, accuracy should improve with greater usage. So if at first the answer is not what you'd expect, please continue to try it over the next couple of days and ask your friends to do the same. [G] A different kind of company name Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:37 AM PDT Official Google Blog: A different kind of company nameEarly last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. We've been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture. Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka. We didn't reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name. But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka's municipal website, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains. In fact, For 150 years, its fortuitous location at the confluence of the Kansas River and the Oregon Trail has made the city formerly known as Topeka a key jumping-off point to the new world of the West, just as for 150 months the company formerly known as Google has been a key jumping-off point to the new world of the web. When in 1858 a crucial bridge built across the Kansas River was destroyed by flooding mere months later, it was promptly rebuilt — and we too are accustomed to releasing 2.0 versions of software after stormy feedback on our 'beta' releases. And just as the town's nickname is "Top City," and the word "topeka" itself derives from a term used by the Kansa and Ioway tribes to refer to "a good place to dig for potatoes," we'd like to think that our website is one of the web's top places to dig for information. In the early 20th century, the former Topeka enjoyed a remarkable run of political prominence, gracing the nation with Margaret Hill McCarter, the first woman to address a national political convention (1920, Republican); Charles Curtis, the only Native American ever to serve as vice president ('29 to '33, under Herbert Hoover); Carrie Nation, leader of the old temperance movement (and wielder of American history's most famous hatchet); and, most important, Alfred E. Neuman, arguably the most influential figure to an entire generation of Americans. We couldn't be happier to add our own chapter to this storied history. A change this dramatic won't happen without consequences, perhaps even some disruptions. Here are a few of the thorny issues that we hope everyone in the broader Topeka community will bear in mind as we begin one of the most important transitions in our company's history:

[G] Introducing Standard Voicemail Mode Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:37 AM PDT Google Voice Blog: Introducing Standard Voicemail ModeAh, remember the days when you'd be in the middle of leaving a voicemail and suddenly hear an unexpected beep to indicate you had run out of time for that message? Or when you'd return from vacation only to find your voicemail box was full and friends weren't able to get through to leave messages for days?Experiences like these were stripped from voicemail users across the country as a result of Google Voice. And, to be honest, some people on the team have started to miss these rituals of yonder years. Today, we take a first step in restoring people's right to pager integration, unexpected beeps, caps on the number of messages that can be received, and more, in a feature we are calling Standard Voicemail ModeTM. Standard Voicemail ModeTM brings your voicemail back to something reminiscent of 1997, with features like:

[G] 3D Books! - Google Books Now Offers Digital Books in a New Dimension Posted: 01 Apr 2010 12:25 AM PDT Inside Google Books: 3D Books! - Google Books Now Offers Digital Books in a New DimensionPosted by Jeff Breidenbach, Dan Bloomberg, and Nathan Naze, Software EngineersThese days, 3D seems to be everywhere. From Hollywood blockbusters to LCD televisions, those iconic cardboard glasses seem to be everywhere, even on President Obama. Our friends at YouTube released a 3D experiment, and NASA released 3D images from the Mars rovers. This got a few of us on the Google Books team to thinking: why not offer our books in 3D? So we've done exactly that. Now, when you visit a book, you'll see a new option: "View in 3D". Click it and you'll see the page as an anaglyphic image. You'll need a pair of red-cyan 3D glasses and you'll be able to start reading in 3D! URL: http://booksearch.blogspot.com/2010/03/3d-books-google-books-now-offers.html |
[G] Google Annotations Gallery Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:10 PM PDT Google Open Source Blog: Google Annotations GalleryThe Google Annotations Gallery is an exciting new Java open source library that provides a rich set of annotations for developers to express themselves. Do you find the standard Java annotations dry and lackluster? Have you ever resorted to leaving messages to fellow developers with the @Deprecated annotation? Wouldn't you rather leave a @LOL or @Facepalm instead? If so, then this is gallery for you.Not only can you leave expressive remarks in your code, you can use these annotations to draw attention to your poetic endeavors. How many times have you written a palindromic or synechdochal line of code and wished you could annotate it for future readers to admire? Look no further than @Palindrome and @Synechdoche. But wait, there's more. The Google Annotations Gallery comes complete with dynamic bytecode instrumentation. By using the gag-agent.jar Java agent, you can have your annotations behavior-enforced at runtime. For example, if you want to ensure that a method parameter is non-zero, try @ThisHadBetterNotBe(Property.ZERO). Want to completely inhibit a method's implementation? Try @Noop. If we've whet your appetite for truly expressive annotations, then read on and immerse yourself in the Google Annotations Gallery. [G] TEXTp saves YouTube bandwidth, money Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:10 PM PDT YouTube Blog: TEXTp saves YouTube bandwidth, moneyIt's great news that there are 24 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, we support 1080p and HD uploads are rising quickly, but that's also meant increasing bandwidth costs cutting into our bottom line. And so, in our drive to keep expenses under control, we've decided that April 1 is the perfect day to take the important step of offering a new way to experience YouTube: text-only mode, or TEXTp.TEXTp is the result of months of intense transcoding efforts by our engineers, who toiled for weeks to ensure that a large chunk of videos on the platform could be reduced to their most basic elements. By replacing the images in the video with a series of letters and numbers, the videos are far less taxing on our system -- and have the added benefit of promoting literacy! To give it a whirl, make sure you have the latest Flash player (10.0) and click here. Or you can select "TEXTp" from the pulldown menu on most videos, as so: You can also append &textp=fool to most video URLs to test it out. For every person who selects TEXTp and keeps it on while you watch a video, you save YouTube $1 a second, resulting in potentially billions of dollars of savings for us. So if you care about YouTube, you'll use TEXTp today. [G] Announcing upload and store anything in Google Docs Posted: 31 Mar 2010 09:03 PM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Announcing upload and store anything in Google DocsEarlier this year we launched the ability to store and share any file on Google Docs. Since then, we've received great feedback from our users and today we're excited to announce the logical extension of this feature: the ability to store anything on Google Docs. Just like files in Google Docs, you can easily access any physical object you've stored with Google and share it with anyone in the world. Have a friend post it on Google Docs and download it on the go. And now you never have to run out of business cards - store some online and you'll be able to retrieve them whenever you meet someone! We also make it easy to search and find what you need across your entire collection of objects, with automatic indexing of everything you store on Google Docs. And as with all your files, you can rest easy knowing your objects are securely stored in the cloud. Posted: 31 Mar 2010 06:11 PM PDT Official Google Mobile Blog: Stars in mobile searchEarlier this month on the Official Google Blog, we announced how stars make search more personal by allowing you to mark and rediscover your favorite content. Today, we are extending this feature so that you can get to your favorite content on your phone, anytime, anywhere. For example, if you previously searched for "car reviews" and starred a few sites that were useful while researching cars on your computer, searching for "car reviews" on your phone will allow you to rediscover your starred items. If there are additional results that you want to star while on mobile, simply click the star marker beside the result, and you will be able to see it later when searching from your computer or phone. To try this yourself, go to google.com on your phone's browser, sign in to your Google Account and do a search. Star a few results and then do the search again to see your starred items appear at the top of your results. To see the same starred items between computer and phone, make sure you are signed in to the same account. The stars in search functionality is currently supported on Android phones, iPhones/iPods, and Palm WebOS devices in the US. [G] New video page launches for all users Posted: 31 Mar 2010 04:18 PM PDT YouTube Blog: New video page launches for all usersAs you may know, we're in the midst of one of the largest redesigns in YouTube's history: we're simplifying the look and functionality of the video page. That's the page you see whenever a video plays, and this redesign is about going "back to basics," focusing attention on the reason why you came to YouTube in the first place -- the video -- and all the ways you engage with content and creators. We first unveiled the new video page two months ago and checked in four weeks later to tell you about the latest set of changes. Truth is, we've been thinking about this for a long time: what you see is the result of eight months' worth of user research, feedback and data analysis. Now, after a few more additions based on your latest feedback, we are rolling it out to 100% of YouTube users. Here's what's new about the page: Overall look and functionality - It's cleaner, simpler and easier to use. - Information about a video is now grouped together in one place and there's a consistent way to get more detail when you need it. This way, unless something's truly useful to you, it doesn't clutter up your page. - We've cleaned up the actions bar; you'll see a streamlined presentation for sharing, flagging, and embedding controls. Discovery - The right-hand side of the page is devoted to the next video to watch. We're smarter about suggesting the next videos to watch based on how you found the video you're watching in the first place. - The channel name and subscribe button are now both on top of the video. We found that you prefer having a quick peek at more videos uploaders have created before deciding whether to subscribe to their channels. Playlists - There's a new playlist interface, with the next video in the list appearing consistently in the top right. You can easily expand that list or skip ahead using a new next button in the player controls. - Saving to playlists is easier, and we've made Favorites the default option. Ratings - We've replaced the five-star ratings system with a simpler "likes / dislikes" model and introduced a new "Videos I Liked" list. Comments - Comments have a new highlights view which summarizes the best discussions and celebrates when creators communicate with their audiences. We know this is a big change, but we hope you'll find the new page to be an improvement to your YouTube experience and to be a reflection of what you've told us thus far through your usage of the site and your comments to us. We'll be gathering in a conference room at our San Bruno, CA, headquarters at 6 p.m. PT today and tomorrow, and in London at 9 a.m. GMT tomorrow, to respond in near-real-time to your comments in the forums, on this blog and on Twitter. Of course, we'll be listening at other times, too, but we wanted to make sure we were available when you might have the most questions about these changes. [G] Enjoy March while it’s still cold Posted: 31 Mar 2010 04:18 PM PDT Google LatLong: Enjoy March while it's still coldThe last day of March is typically the warmest day of the month. Today, scientists at Climate Central are launching a new interactive Google Map, which allows you to view areas of future freezing in the month of the March in the U.S. The map shows high-resolution projections for future average March temperatures in the U.S. through the end of the century, focusing on where the average temperature is expected to be above or below freezing. You can use the time controls to scroll through the years, or click "play" to view an animation. You can also compare low vs. high carbon pollution scenarios. While warm weather lovers may like the idea of warmer Marches, this would mean earlier snowmelt, which has been linked to drier rivers and forests later in the summer, and very much higher wildfire activity in the American West. We could also expect water shortages for farm irrigation and trouble for trout and other cold-water stream life. See how your area will fare by visiting the map now! [G] Google Ad Innovations: where ads are going next Posted: 31 Mar 2010 01:50 PM PDT Inside AdWords: Google Ad Innovations: where ads are going nextIn the past year, Google's advertising tools have moved in some exciting directions. We've introduced more data-driven and efficient campaign management with the new AdWords interface, easier account optimization with the Opportunities tab, and new ad formats like Ad Sitelinks and Product Extensions that provide more context and value to those who see them, to name a few. But where is advertising with Google headed next? Which new tools, formats and features will make it possible for you to communicate with your customers in more meaningful, creative ways? We've started a new project, Google Ad Innovations, to answer that very question. Google Ad Innovations is a website where you can explore Google's latest advertising technologies, watch short video demos, and try out select new tools. The technologies we'll highlight on Google Ad Innovations are at various stages of development, from early tests to fully released features. Here are a few of the new releases you'll find on Ad Innovations right now:
There's a lot to see on Ad Innovations, but we want it to be more than a show and tell site. Every Ad Innovations page will have a feedback link, so if you see a feature that can be improved or think we've hit on a valuable new idea, let us know! The comments and suggestions you leave while using Google Ad Innovations will go directly to the Google team working on the feature. If you want to stay on the cutting edge of Google advertising products, visit Google Ad Innovations. We'll regularly add new tools and features to the site, and would love to hear your thoughts. [G] Picasa 3.6 for Mac, now in 35 languages Posted: 31 Mar 2010 12:38 PM PDT Google Photos Blog: Picasa 3.6 for Mac, now in 35 languagesPosted by David Catmull, Software EngineerWe launched Picasa for Mac in Google Labs just over a year ago, and it's grown up fast. With the 3.5 launch, Picasa for Mac matched the features of Picasa for PC, and today we're excited to announce the next milestone: Picasa for Mac is now available in 35 languages. For the first time, Mac users who speak languages other than English can take advantage of Picasa's free photo-editing and organization tools, plus lots of new stuff that's been added recently: adding name tags, creating collaborative albums, and geotagging photos using Google Maps. For an in-depth overview of all the new features available, check out our launch blog posts for Picasa 3.5 and 3.6 or the Picasa Help Center. To get Picasa 3.6 for Mac in your language, download the newest version from picasa.google.com/mac/ or from your local Picasa site. When you load Picasa for the first time, it displays in the same language as your operating system, and you can always easily change your language settings in System Preferences. [G] Bridging the gap: The Anatomy of an Advertising Campaign Posted: 31 Mar 2010 12:38 PM PDT Inside AdSense: Bridging the gap: The Anatomy of an Advertising CampaignThe Google Content Network (Google's ad network that includes over a million websites) connects Google's hundreds of thousands of advertisers with our 1 million publishers. Advertisers can control where the extra layer of control and complexity is added with our targeting options. Here are the ways an advertiser can show ads on your site.Advertisers choose a particular targeting option depending on their overall goals. You might be most familiar with contextual targeting, which enables advertisers to choose broad themes that match the content of your site. For example, if I'm marketing my cheese shop, I create a keyword list that includes terms such as "cheese," "gourmet" "cheese," and "delicatessen," among others. This would allow my cheese shop ads to show up on sites about gourmet cheeses as well as next to content on other sites that mention gourmet cheeses. At the same time, some advertisers are interested in showing their ads on specific sites because they find a match between the site's visitors and their offerings. They can do this using placement targeting; in general, advertisers who tend to be more brand-sensitive use placement targeting because they can choose the sites where they want to show their ads. More recently, we've opened up remarketing, which enables advertisers to target ads to users they've previously interacted with, to all AdWords advertisers. At the same time, users can continue to control the ads they see by using the Ads Preferences Manager. To help advertisers target your sites, we recommend ensuring that there's a clear theme to each of your pages, if you're going to allow for placement targeting, create sections of your pages that clients can target easily. Lastly, think about your site from an advertiser's perspective. [G] Introducing Google Ad Innovations Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:50 AM PDT Official Google Blog: Introducing Google Ad InnovationsThe principle behind the advertising products we build at Google is simple: ads are information. But the type of information that ads provide is getting more varied and inventive all the time, and as a result ads are getting more interesting, social and useful. As advertising evolves, we want to build the tools that make it possible for marketers to connect with customers in meaningful, creative ways. We've found that the best way to do that is to focus on the user, test new approaches regularly and listen closely to the feedback of the advertisers using our products. To work closely with advertisers on what comes next, today we've launched Google Ad Innovations, where we'll show you some of our latest ideas around advertising technologies and get your feedback. One of the new features we're showcasing is a set of AdWords reports, launched last week, called Search Funnels. These reports can help an advertiser understand whether there are keywords in her account that are helping to drive sales at a later date. At Google Ad Innovations, you can read more about this feature, watch a video walking you through how it works and send us your ideas on how to improve it. If you're interested in the future of advertising with Google, pay Ad Innovations a visit — we'll regularly add tools and features to the site, and we hope you'll check them out! [G] Give your Google Message Security filters a tune-up Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:32 AM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Give your Google Message Security filters a tune-upGoogle Postini security services work in the cloud to help prevent spam and viruses before they hit your servers. These services also make it easy for admins to fine-tune filtering options to get the right level of protection for their organization's unique needs. It can often be a delicate balance between protecting networks from attacks and allowing employees the flexibility to use email effectively. To help achieve this balance, today we're introducing a new Google Message Security reporting feature: Health Check. Health Check helps you maximize the effectiveness of your spam filters. Think of it as a self-service "tune-up" for your Postini filters. It gives admins a comprehensive report that will help them check how current configurations impact the effectiveness of antispam and antivirus filters. This report also highlights deviations from our recommended best practices, so that you can see areas where more protection might be helpful and select the levels that best meet your needs. For example, reports can "flag" areas of risk in user-defined settings, help optimize Approved Sender Lists, and guide the way you set up firewalls. In this snippet from a Health Check report, the Virus Outbreak Level for this account is set to "Normal" (see red outline over item "2"). Our guidelines suggest that admins set this to Very High to increase security against viruses and malware. Deviations from recommended best practices are highlighted in red text so you can easily identify where changes can be made to tighten security. With Health Check, we hope to empower administrators to make the best use of Postini Services. Health Check is now available through the Postini service administration console to Postini and Google Apps Premier Edition customers. [G] Announcing Dual Delivery for Google Postini Services Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:32 AM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Announcing Dual Delivery for Google Postini ServicesToday we're introducing Dual Delivery, a new feature for Google Message Security that enables a copy of an email to be delivered to two different mail hosts. Dual Delivery provides two benefits. First, it can be used to support migration to a new email service; second, it can be used as a backup email access point. Dual Delivery allows an interruption-free migration to a new email solution. By enabling incoming email messages to be copied and sent to two different mailhosts, Dual Delivery gives users the chance to familiarize themselves with a new email platform without disrupting mailflow to the existing system. It also gives IT the chance to learn from user behavior and understand the technical implications of a migration before a full rollout. Dual Delivery also makes it easier to pilot and migrate to Google Apps. By enabling the "Send a copy to Google Apps Gmail" feature of Dual Delivery, you can test Gmail without interrupting current practice. If you choose to switch over to Google Apps, you can enable the "Use Google Apps Gmail" feature in the Administration Console to directly route all of your mail to Gmail without having to manually reroute your MX records. In addition to supporting migration, Dual Delivery can be used as a secondary email access point. If users are unable to access their primary mailbox for any reason, or if admins want to give users cloud-based remote or mobile email access, Dual Delivery can provide read/write email access through a secondary inbox. Dual Delivery is now available to Postini customers through the Delivery Manager settings in the Postini Administration Console. For more information about the Google Postini suite of security and archiving services, visit www.google.com/postini Posted by Gopal Shah, Google Postini team URL: http://googleenterprise.blogspot.com/2010/03/announcing-dual-delivery-for-google.html |
[G] YouTube community and Hollywood team up to address global development Posted: 31 Mar 2010 07:50 AM PDT YouTube Blog: YouTube community and Hollywood team up to address global developmentThe facts about the developing world are pretty staggering. Approximately 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. For every $1 in aid a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment. Almost half the world – 3 billion people – live on less than $2.50 a day.Earlier this month, Jeremy Piven challenged you to educate others about the issues facing the developing world and the organizations working hard to address these problems, by making a video and submitting it to YouTube's Video Volunteers program. You responded with fervor. This round of Video Volunteers had one of the highest participation rates so far, and the videos submitted ranged from creative and quirky... ...to beautiful and solemn... Today, you'll find the top three submissions on the YouTube homepage, alongside a video from Jeremy Piven and members of young Hollywood on behalf of the ONE Campaign . Later this week, we'll kick off a new climate-change focused round of Video Volunteers with former Vice President and environmental leader Al Gore, so stay tuned for news about that and our special Earth Day homepage spotlight.
