[G] Google Summer of Code Meetup in Belgium Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:09 PM PDT Google Open Source Blog: Google Summer of Code Meetup in BelgiumOn the 6th of April, Google Summer of Code veterans Vincent Verhoeven (student for both KDE and Thousand Parsec) and Bram Luyten (mentor for DSpace) gave a presentation about the Google Summer of Code 2011 program to an audience of interested students. The Google Summer of Code schedule is quite challenging for Belgian students because of the large overlaps between the program and their examinations. However, the presenters made it clear that with careful planning in the application and transparent communication with mentors, successful participation is definitely possible. As an added bonus, if students are accepted in the Google Summer of Code program their participation can be counted as an internship for some of the master's programs at K.U. Leuven. The presenters were struck by the fact that of the 30+ attendees, none of them had any experience contributing to open source projects. Each of the students used open source software on a daily basis (Firefox, Linux, etc.) so it seemed like a natural progression for this generation of developers to start contributing to the open source community and Google Summer of Code is a great way for that introduction. Vincent's testimonial made it clear that participating in the Google Summer of Code can be just the start of a series of interesting experiences. Following up on his participation in the Google Summer of Code, Vincent and his buddies from the Thousand Parsac held a codesprint together at the GooglePlex. It's more than bits & bytes alone, it's about building relationships and friendships that last far beyond the span of one summer. [G] Students announced for 2011 Google Summer of Code Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:09 PM PDT Google Open Source Blog: Students announced for 2011 Google Summer of CodeWe have announced the 1,116 students that will be participating in this year's Google Summer of Code program. Students will now start the community bonding period where they will get to know their mentors and prepare for the program by reading documentation, hanging out in the IRC channel and familiarizing themselves with their new community before beginning their actual coding at the end of May. If you are interested in learning more about the 175 organizations that the students will be working with during the 2011 Google Summer of Code or important dates, please visit the program website. Congratulations to our accepted students! We look forward to an exciting and productive summer of coding. [G] The Slow Mo Guys are April’s “On The Rise” winners Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:01 PM PDT YouTube Blog: The Slow Mo Guys are April's "On The Rise" winnersCongratulations to The Slow Mo Guys, who took an early lead and went on to win this month's edition of On The Rise, the program where you decide which up-and-coming YouTube partner gets a spot on the homepage. The Slow Mo Guys will be featured on the YouTube homepage today, thanks to your support and votes.A quick history on The Slow Mo Guys: Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy have been experimenting with high-speed cameras since 2004. Whether documenting birds of prey swooping, droplets colliding, or the effects of taking a ball to the face, these friends take on the world at a slower pace. Here's more from The Slow Mo Guys themselves: "I have loved watching stuff in slow motion ever since I was a kid. I used to watch fight scenes from movies frame by frame on VHS so I could see all the action. When I got the opportunity to work with high speed cameras I saw this as my opportunity to film as many things as possible in super slow motion. I have been doing it for about 6 years now as a profession, but only recently got a computer powerful enough to deal with such massive files for my own show! Looking at things in slow motion makes you realise what you actually miss out on when you see things at "human speed". Sometimes you see something completely unexpected, sometimes can see how stuff works and sometimes stuff in slow motion just makes you laugh! It has been a great honour to participate in YouTube's On The Rise contest. I would like to thank everyone who voted for us and to welcome all our new subscribers!" Gavin Free If you're enjoying our monthly blog series and want to see more rising YouTube stars, head over to our "On The Rise" channel and check out our playlists on the browse page. Check back next month, as your channel may be the next one featured! Devon Storbeck, Account Manager, recently watched "The Slow Mo Guys - Fly Eats Fly in Slow Motion."' [G] Introducing the new Google Docs app for Android Posted: 27 Apr 2011 04:58 PM PDT Official Google Enterprise Blog: Introducing the new Google Docs app for Android(Cross-posted from the Google Docs Blog and Google Mobile Blog.) Increasingly, people are using mobile phones to access information -- from email to web browsing to editing documents. Part of getting work done on the go is being able to easily access, edit and share content, which is why we're happy to announce the new Google Docs app for Android. With this new app it's easy to filter and search for your content across any Google account, then jump straight into editing docs using the online mobile editors. The app also allows you to easily share items with contacts on your phone, right from within the app. The Docs app also allows you to upload content from your phone and open documents directly from Gmail. You can also add a widget to your home screen for easy access to three core tasks: jumping to your starred documents, taking a photo to upload, or creating a new document with one tap. And my favorite feature: Using the app and your phone's camera, you can turn photos with text into editable Google documents with the power of optical character recognition (OCR). Just create a new 'Document from Photo' or select the camera icon from the widget, and your converted document will appear in your documents list shortly after you snap the picture. You can also convert photos already stored on your phone by sharing them with the Google Docs app. OCR does a pretty good job capturing unformatted text in English but won't recognize handwriting or some fonts - stay tuned, it will get better over time! The Google Docs app is currently available in English and works on Android 2.1+ phones. Try it out by scanning the QR code below or by visiting Android Market. On May 2, NASA Commander Mark Kelly and his crew will take your questions live from space on YouTube. PBS NewsHour will live stream the interview from its YouTube channel with veteran space reporter Miles O'Brien curating and asking your questions to the crew. [G] Imagery Update - Week of April 25th Posted: 27 Apr 2011 04:03 PM PDT Google LatLong: Imagery Update - Week of April 25thThe Google Earth and Google Maps Imagery Team has just published it's latest batch of satellite and aerial imagery and as always, there's all kinds of fascinating sites and features to see. This release will be our last for April and this month, in particular is always associated in the northern hemisphere with spring and new beginnings. We can trace the meaning of the word April to the latin word aperire, "to open," and what better way to describe "open" than the start of another Major League Baseball season! Below you can see in high-resolution glory, the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants warming up at their Scottsdale, Arizona spring training park for opening day and defense of their title. In this image, they were hosting the Milwaukee Brewers. As the Giants' home field is only an hour away from Google's HQ in Mountain View, they are often the talk of choice in our offices! Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale, Arizona Below is another example of new beginnings. In this high-res aerial example, we can see Plymouth Rock (lower left), landing site of English Separatists and Anglicans looking for a new life, and the Mayflower 2 (upper right), a replica of their ship the Mayflower, both of which are located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Plymouth Rock, Plymouth, Massachusetts Finally, here's an aerial image of the Sendai Airport in Sendai, Japan as they're preparing to re-open. To see how the clean-up and rebuilding has progressed at the airport and adjoining neighborhoods, use Google Earth's Historical Imagery slider to see earlier post-quake imagery of the area. It's impressive to see. Sendai Airport, Sendai, Japan As always, these are but a few examples of the types of features that can be seen and discovered in our latest batch of published imagery. Happy exploring! High Resolution Aerial Updates: USA: Phoenix, Tuscon, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Wichita, Austin, Cape Cod Japan: Sendai Countries/Regions receiving High Resolution Satellite Updates: Antarctica, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Chad, China, Croatia, Egypt, England, France, Georgia, Germany, Haiti, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Nigeria, North Korea, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United States, Uruguay, Western Sahara, Yemen, Zambia These updates are now available in both Google Maps and Google Earth. [G] Google Voice User Story: A Way with Words Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:35 PM PDT Google Voice Blog: Google Voice User Story: A Way with WordsFor the third installment of Google Voice user stories, we heard from Grant Barrett, the co-host of A Way with Words, a radio show about words and language.Tell us about your organization A Way with Words is run by a nonprofit with an educational mission: to further understanding of language, to encourage life-long learning, and to promote human understanding through better communication. It airs in 73 different cities and at a lot of different times, so, our toll-free number is a necessity. We can't be there at all hours to answer. How are you using Google Voice? Calls go from the toll-free number to a local number to voicemail -- Google Voice -- where we archive them and use them to plan future shows. Five of us look at the transcripts and listen to the calls. We use the notes field to indicate which are feedback for follow-ups, which are new questions that we might want to turn into segments, and which are stories from listeners who want to be heard but maybe don't want to be on the air. We mix those with what we get via email and social media, and in that way put together a show. Now that we have more than 2800 calls saved on Google Voice we can use it like we already use our email: as a repository of questions and comments from listeners. So if one person asks about, say, why bell peppers are called mangoes in part of the country, we can search through the voicemail transcripts (which, while imperfect, are good enough), and our email, and begin to get an idea of what a lot of people want to know about that topic. It helps tailor each segment of the show. There is an insatiable need -- a hunger, even -- to have questions about language answered. People ask us more questions in a given week than we could possibly ever answer in a weekly, hour-long show. But we're doing more than we were before, and Google Voice is a part of that. If you or someone you know is using Google Voice in a unique way, we'd love to hear about it! Fill out this short form and your story may get featured on the Google Voice blog.
